I find that when I make a sick move to beat a defenseman or open something up it often doesn't take a similarly sick move/shot to beat the goalie. I don't know if they get surprised or if they get jumpy after seeing the defenseman get embarrassed or what happens, but it sure seems like I've scored a lot of soft goals after great plays away from the net.
No matter how good a goalie's technique is, when he has to change angle there is always something open that he wishes wasn't. And when you dance around a D man, the goalie always has to change angle.
I teach D men that if they are going to cheat one way to force a forward to try and dance around them, cheat to the middle, so when they make the move they go to the outside. Make the lane to the net shallower. Makes the goalie look better.
