Right now, the Giants have 9 players (technically, 10 are supposed still in camp) in big league camp who are 25 years old or younger. Listed in order from oldest to youngest and likelihood of making the team:
Brett Wisely (5/8/99) - In a pitched battle with Casey Schmitt and Christian Koss for the utility infielder spot. Was leading the charge but its too close to call right now.
Patrick Bailey (5/29/99) - Starting catcher. Lock on the team.
Randy Rodriguez (9/5/99) - I thought he would be on the Opening Day bullpen but it seems that he may be ticketed for AAA to start the season.
Heliot Ramos (9/7/99) - Starting left fielder. Lock on the team.
Juan Mercedes (4/3/00) - The technically in camp guy but hasn't pitched since Feb. 23rd. I am going to guess he got sent down but his name was overlooked in the latest transactions page on the team's website.
Wade Meckler (4/21/00) - Longshot to make the team as the 5th outfielder. Likely starting in Sacramento.
Grant McCray (12/7/00) - Dueling with Matos for the 4th spot on the team. Only one will make it.
Kyle Harrison (8/12/01) - On the outside in the competition for the 5th starter. Could be in Sacramento to start the year.
Hayden Birdsong (8/30/01) - Thought to be in the 5th starter competition but has mainly thrown in relief. Unlikely to make the team.
Luis Matos (1/28/02) - Dueling with McCray for the 4th spot on the team. Only one will make it.

Looks like only 3 to 5 of these players will break camp with the Giants for Opening Day.

Here is the next age group of players (26-29):
Logan Porter (7/12/95) - Likely still in camp just to give Huff, Bailey and Stassi breathers but is not hitting well. Ticketed for AAA.
Willy Adames (9/2/95) - Starting shortstop. Lock for the roster.
Ryan Walker (11/26/95) - Closer (for now, at least). Lock for the roster.
Tristan Beck (6/24/96) - Battling for one of two bullpen spots and not looking very good for him right now.
Jordan Hicks (9/6/96) - 4th starter. Lock for the roster.
Logan Webb (11/18/96) - Staff ace. Lock for the roster.
David Villar (1/27/97) - Highly likely he is dfa'd just before start of season.
Joel Peguero (5/5/97) - Having a good spring training but longshot for a bullpen spot, having just reached AA for first time in 2024.
Sean Hjelle (5/7/97) - One of the top bullpen spots. Lock for the roster.
Camilo Doval (7/4/97) - One of the top bullpen spots. Lock for the roster.
Tyler Fitzgerald (9/15/97) - Starting 2nd baseman (for now, at least). Lock for the roster.
Jerar Encarnacion (10/22/97) - Most likely platoon DH and 4th/5th outfielder.
Sam Huff (1/14/98) - Tom Murphy's injury has given Huff the inside track on the back catcher spot.
Christian Koss (1/27/98) - No major league experience but hitting well in spring to put him in the mix with Wisely and Schmitt.
Erik Miller (2/13/98) - Primary lefty in the bullpen. Lock for the roster.
Keaton Winn (2/20/98) - Battling for one of two bullpen spots. May get squeezed out.
Jung Hoo Lee (8/20/98) - Starting center fielder. Lock for roster.
Landen Roupp (9/10/98) - Possibly has inside track on 5th starter spot.
Casey Schmitt (3/1/99) - Battling with Koss and Wisely for backup infielder. Hard to determine who will get it.

This group will have at least 9 players on the OP roster and as many as 13 (half the roster).

And let's look last at the "geriatric" group (30+) (lot of NRIs here):
Justin Verlander (2/20/83) - Number 3 in rotation and future HOF. Lock for roster.
Mike Yastrzemski (8/23/90) - Platoon/starting right fielder. Lock for roster.
Jake Lamb (10/9/90) - Battling for 1st base/DH spot.
Tyler Rogers (12/17/90) - Senior member of bullpen and likely setup man. Lock for roster.
Enny Romero (1/24/91) - NRI battling Trivino for final bullpen spot.
Max Stassi (3/15/91) - Trying to make comeback as backup catcher. Possibly going to AAA to start season.
Tom Murphy (4/3/91) - Most likely opening the season on the IL.
Wilmer Flores (8/6/91) - Battling with Wade for 1st base and Encarnacion and Lamb for DH spot. Possible surprise cut.
Robbie Ray (10/1/91) - Number two behind Webb. Lock for roster.
Lou Trivino (10/1/91) - NRI battling Romero for final bullpen spot.
Matt Chapman (4/28/93) - Starting 3rd baseman. Lock for roster.
Joey Lucchesi (6/6/93) - NRI likely to make bullpen as 2nd lefty.
Lamonte Wade, Jr (1/1/94) - Likely to platoon at 1st base and possible outfield play. Lock for roster.
Spencer Bivens (6/28/94) - had a good 2024 season and been decent in spring training but likely to get bumped to AAA.
Miguel Diaz (11/28/94) - NRI looking to make it back to big leagues. Spring not great but not awful. Likely AAA.

Looks like 8 to 10 players from this group will make the team.

If 30 is “geriatric”…

How many think Lamb could have enough momentum to push Flores off the roster? I'm not sure if that is the case yet but if Lamb can stay hot and Flores cools, it could possibly happen. More likely, the Giants push Encarnacion off in favor of Lamb but I still think Flores and Encarnacion both make the team and Lamb gets to decide if he wants to stick around in Sacramento.

Bird with another 5 shutout innings today. 8K no walks.

It looks like he may have pitched himself into the rotation. Grain of salt/it's only ST/etc...but

I'd assume they will send Harry to Sac , and Roupp to the bullpen.

Edit: or both Bird and Roupp in the rotation and Hicks and Harry to Sac.

No ways Hicks goes down to Sacramento. He has 6 years of service time. He can receive any assignment to AAA. He signed to be a starter with the Giants, not the RiverCats. Highly doubt he'd accept that assignment.

Do you see Roupp making the bullpen over Trivino and Lucchesi? Trivino is one of Melvin's boys and has been good in spring training. I think you mentioned that it would take a few bad outings in spring for him to lose his job. Maybe the Giants go with one lefty in the bullpen but Lucchesi has been fairly good in spring training and throws left handed.

I get the feeling that if Birdsong makes the starting rotation that both Harrison and Roupp go to AAA. Of course, we've got a couple weeks for things to shake out.

You're probably right re: Harry, Roupp and Bird. 2 will go to Sac, one will stay up. Harry has things to work on so it comes down to Roupp and Bird. And it's probably too early to put Hicks into the bully. I think Lucchesi makes the team.

Harrison is for sure not making the big club. Hicks though, I think they feel like he had a good season last year until he hit the wall and plan to push forward with him this year. Comes down to Roupp vs Birdsong, I think I prefer Roupp based on stuff I'm hearing on the radio. Good to see Vogelsong 2.0 finishing strong though. Lot of pitching depth with this team even if they lack no doubt ace level guys. Having like 6-7 potential #2 starters is pretty good, and there's a chance we get ace level seasons from a couple.

Birdsong has pretty damn good stuff too. And he has 4.5 (maybe 5 full if he has everything working) pitches that he can throw for strikes. Are you thinking of somebody else or am I misunderstanding what you’re saying?

No I like him a lot too but the local pundits were hyping Roupp

Gotcha, ya, Birdy still has swing and miss stuff. I haven’t watched Roupp this spring (thanks Giants!), but he has two dominant pitches iirc. He may have rounded out his arsenal though.
