TLDR:

C - Neither Huff nor Stassi are impressing at the plate. Toss up.
IF - Wisely leads over Schmitt and is LH.
OF - Matos looks like the 5th OF; Jerar is a lock as 4th OF/DH
SP - Top four set (Spider, JV, Ray, Hicks). Harry has the inside track over Bird and Roupp
BP - Top six set (Walker, Rogers, Doval, Hjelle, RanRod, Miller). Other two spots are open.

I'm still hopeful that he'll figure out 1b. Hes quite an athlete but just learning the position.
I am OK with delaying his MLB takeover by a year so he can learn the position. But I know he has made it known that he wants to get to the majors ASAP, and his bat APPEARS to be MLB ready (or very close to, at least).

He will almost certainly get AT LEAST his cuppo this year. But I want him as a 1B, not a DH.

I wonder what the likelihood is if Harrison and either Birdsong or (more likely) Roupp have good springs that one of the three ends up in the bullpen. I said more likely Roupp because the Giants have already shown that they'll put him in the big league bullpen. I get the feeling that if Birdsong doesn't start with the Giants he will start in Sacramento.

Birdy is super young. I expect that almost no matter how well he pitches, he will start in Richmond or Sacto. I would prefer Roupp stay a starter in the minors. But maybe he has a future as a swing/long reliever.

He's not blocking Ramos though, Ramos is in left and is our 1st OF (or maybe 2nd we'll see if he keeps up the hitting). If Luciano and Matos weren't busts he might be blocking them but they are so he's not.

If we get someone better than Yaz via draft or trade, Yaz will be a tremendous 4th OF.
I hope Luci proves us wrong, but he may in fact be a bust…more for his glove than his bat even tho it’s both right now. That said, I’d be very hesitant to call Matos a bust. He has a lot of tools and is a much better spray/gaps hitter than power/pull hitter. It sounds like the new regime wants him to be himself. FZ wanted more bulk/power and pull and that messed with him. I know it was brief, but he looked really good for a short time in the bigs.

I actually half expect him to push Yaz to the bench this year. Expect may be strong, but wouldn’t be surprised.

I agree Luciano is looking far more like a bust, just my gut on Matos. You make good points, and it would be great if he finally gets it this year and becomes the starter. Loses some defense though.

I think Lucky CAN hook up somewhere as a bench bat. He seems to have a somewhat MLB ready bat. But his glove is beyond bad. He may end up being the first player in MLB history to commit an error while playing DH.

Damn near coaching malpractice that they never saw this in him and didn’t get him off short YEARS ago.

unless this is just yips. That is a possibility, I guess…
