PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) -- The Seattle Mariners acquired right-hander Chase De Jong from the Los Angeles Dodgers for a pair of minor leaguers Wednesday.

The Mariners sent infielder Drew Jackson and pitcher Aneurys Zabala to the Dodgers, and designated infielder Mike Freeman for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.

De Jong, 23, is coming off a stellar 2016 season mostly spent at Double-A where he went 15-2 with a 2.82 ERA in 26 starts with Tulsa. He was promoted to Triple-A Oklahoma City for one game. He was named the Texas League pitcher of the year last season. Seattle general manager Jerry Dipoto says the Mariners see De Jong as ''knocking at the door,'' of being a starter in the majors.

Freeman, 29, hit .227 in 21 games in the majors last season, 13 of those with Seattle.

Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today from Spring Training that the club has acquired right-handed pitcher Chase De Jong from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for a pair of minor leaguers: infielder Drew Jackson and right-handed pitcher Aneurys Zabala. To make room on the 40-man roster, infielder Mike Freeman has been designated for assignment.

Seattle now has 7 days to trade, release or outright the contract of Freeman to the minors. Seattle’s Major League, 40-man, roster remains full.

“Chase is a very polished young pitcher coming off a very solid season at Double A,” Dipoto said. “We see him as a guy knocking at the door as a Major League starting pitcher.”

De Jong (dee-yong), 23, is a 6-foot-4, 205-pound right-handed pitcher. He has appeared in one game with the Dodgers this spring, striking out 1 batter and not allowing a run in 2.0 innings.

In 2016, De Jong combined for a 15–5, 2.82 mark in 26 starts with AA Tulsa (14–5, 2.86 in 25 GS) and AAA Oklahoma City (1–0, 1.69 in 1 GS) in the Dodgers minor league system. De Jong struck out a combined 133 batters in 147.0 innings pitched in 2016, while walking only 40. Following the season, he was named Texas League Pitcher of the Year and a Baseball America Double A All-Star.

In five minor league seasons, he is 30–21, 3.43 (448.1 IP, 171 ER) in 93 games, 81 starts. For his minor league career, he has nearly a 4-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio, having struck out 416 while walking 106 in 448.1 innings. De Jong was drafted by the Blue Jays in the second round of the 2012 June Draft out of Wilson HS in Long Beach, CA. He was acquired by the Dodgers on July 2, 2015.

Freeman, 29, hit .227 (5x22) with 1 run, 1 double and 1 RBI in 21 games with Seattle (13 G) and Arizona (8 G) in 2016. He was 5x13/.385 in three separate stints with the Mariners (Aug. 7–9, Aug. 25–27 and Sept. 12-Oct. 2). He collected his first Major League hit in his Mariners debut Aug. 7 vs. the Angels.

Jackson, 23, appeared in 124 games in first full season in the minor league with High-A Bakersfield. He was originally selected by Seattle in the 5th round of the 2015 June Draft out of Stanford University and made his professional debut with Everett that year where he was named Northwest League Player of the Year.

Zabala, 20, went 1–5 with 1 save and a 2.88 ERA (8 ER, 25.0 IP) in 16 relief appearances with the Rookie AZL Mariners in 2016. The right-handed reliever walked 15 and struck out 28. Zabala was originally selected by the Mariners as an international non-drafted free agent on April 30, 2014. Over three seasons in the Mariners organization he went 4–13 with a 4.49 ERA (51 ER, 102.1 IP) in 44 games 12 starts.

I'm not as up on our minor leaguers as I am our major leaguers unless they get a lot of press online, so when I don't recognize the names involved in a minor leaguer-for-minor leaguer trade, it's hard for me to give an educated opinion on it. That said, just looking at De Jong's stats, he appears to have the quality that Dipoto harps on most with our pitchers... he throws strikes. If Dipoto is saying that he's on the doorstep of becoming a major league starter, then I can only assume that should our starting rotation require reinforcements throughout the course of the year, he would figure to be among the first to get the call as long as his production doesn't fall off in Tacoma before then. Dipoto wasn't happy with our organizational rotation depth last year and he seems to be trying to beef it up this winter/spring.

I like his attitude.

Never seen this dude play live but he is already my favorite prospect in years. But my other two didn't really pan out for the M's in Adam Jones and Adam Moore.

This is kind of a weird deal, don't know squat about any of these guys involved but De Jong's numbers were astounding, so why would the Dodgers be willing to just give up on him for prospects? Call me skeptical but something doesn't seem right here.

De Jong and another player were traded last year for slot money so I am not sure what exactly JD sees in him. Everything I read says he is a back end MLB pitcher at best. I have seen all the other SP's JD has brought in so I am not exactly sold on his assessment of pitching talent outside of Smyly who I have always really liked even back to his Tigers days.

Those numbers for De Jong are pretty nice and I think we desperately need pitchers who are "knocking on the door." Can't count on every SP to survive a whole season, as evidenced last season. Plus our minor league infield talent hasn't exactly been stellar recently.

When I saw this trade I was kinda bummed we had to DFA Freeman. His numbers weren't great, but I liked him coming off the bench.

I know it doesn't mean a whole lot, but doesn't seem like this spring could've started too much better. Bats are rolling, and it sounds like Smyly looked good yesterday.

No guarantee, but I think there is a good chance he passes through waivers and we add him back.

I don't like this deal much at all. #12 and #22 ranked Mariner Prospects and I really liked Jackson.

Jackson struggled a bit last year but yeah I don't get it. Can never have enough pitching depth but I figured with Miranda, Heston, Whalen, Povse and Moore they were doing ok in that area
