This. Plus you simply have to bat your best hitter 3rd. Melky might surprise us, but Panda has already proven he can hit well at our park.

Again see what happened in 1993.

And Panda isn't a base stealer but he's not a lumbering base clogger either, he can score from 2nd on a deep single or 3rd on a sac fly for example.

As long as we don't see this in 2012:

Posey: 'I don't think I've been that excited to take live BP, ever'

I don’t think I’ve been that excited to take live batting practice – ever,” said Posey, his eyes joyfully wide.

Posey saw 15 pitches from Jeremy Affeldt and Romo, swung at eight and managed to get at least a piece each time. His last round against Romo included an apparent ground-rule double (on a slider) and a crisp line drive to left field (on a challenge fastball.)

Posey tried to get ready by standing in during bullpen sessions to track pitches. It was a different feeling to react in the box, though. He’s going through the same exercise as the rest of the hitters, except his layoff has been more than twice as long.

“It’s all about getting your timing,” Posey said. “It’s seeing some pitches and working on backing up the ball as much as I can. I guess I didn’t really know what to expect, but I was happy with how I felt. That’s the first arm I’ve seen since last May. Regardless of the result, the goal is to see the ball as well as you can and get your timing. So whether you square it up or not, you feel on time.”

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Posey’s excitement level would “be the same when he plays in his first game. It’s never easy, but he looks comfortable and he feels good, and that’s what’s important.”

Cain, Sandoval involved in scary moments during live BP

Buster Posey faced live pitching for the first time since mid-May, but that joyous event was interrupted by two very scary moments Sunday.

Matt Cain was struck in the leg and toppled to the ground after Hector Sanchez sent a line drive screaming up the middle. Cain shook it off and continued his session, then a trainer accompanied him to the clubhouse.

A few minutes later, Jeremy Affeldt lost the handle on a pitch and struck Pablo Sandoval in the ribs, knocking the Kung Fu Panda to the dirt. He stayed down for a moment but dusted himself off and continued his round.

“See? I don’t throw hard,” Affeldt said, after checking to make sure Sandoval was OK.

I'm sure it was all that extra "muscle" in the ribs that kept Panda from serious injury.

Anyone notice a little difference this year in the Bochy has talked about his lineup? In past year, he was always very mum about his plans, keeping an open competition wherever possible.

This year, he seems to have this mindset that everyone should know where they should be. Boch has said that RF is Nate's opportunity to seize, Pagan will be the leadoff guy, there is no 5th starter competition. Obviously, there is competition for the final bench/Pen spots, but there will always be that. And even though these things were relatively obvious, in the past Boch has STILL kept quiet about even the dullest of competitions.

The only one he hasn't admitted much about is the 1B competition, but he has dropped hints that it either Huff/Belt and Pill will be bench option (increasing his versatility/trying his out a lot of different places).

Good post. I've noticed this too. Moreover, I'm not so sure there's a great "competition" for the 12 pitcher or 5th bench spots. By my estimate:

I would move Christian to the VERY long shot list.

Who is Gillespie? Did we trade Gillaspie for him? Is he a friend of ol' Nick?

I'd flip Chez2/3 with Whitey/Stew. While I think it makes more sense with Chez2/3, I don't think he's the primary backup until next year. He's kept in AAA to develop a little more and possibly to build his trade value.

Other than that completely agree, I'd even say Belt is a near lock.

Pavlovic agrees with you; he's got Stewy as a near lock.

Sigh....

As long as it's not Whiteside I'm ok with it.
