Burrell may join team in ST:

Pat Burrell, forced to retire earlier this winter due to a chronic foot problem, might join rejoin the San Francisco Giants for a week or two as a spring training instructor.

The Giants bring back former players such as Will Clark, Robb Nen and Shawon Dunston for coaching cameos cameos each spring and manager Bruce Bochy tells the San Francisco Chronicle he would like to find a similar role for Bochy.

Burrell had one of the majors' best eyes at the plate and could be a valuable hitting instructor.

I think it's a near lock that he will be a hitting instructor for somewhere in his career.

Now there may be other factors of which I am not aware, but I can't see how we could lose anything by finding another role for Hensley Muelens and hiring PTMFB as the hitting instructor. We can't hit any worse than we are. We have nothing to lose by doing this.

While I would LOVE to have PTMFB as the hitting coach, I do not believe Bam Bam deserves to be fired/demoted.

None of the coaches deserve any blame for last year.

Agreed, plus Burrell may not even want to coach yet. He probably just want to go down to Arizona to beat Huff into shape and check in with the boys.

Interesting tidbit about Runzler:

Manager Bruce Bochy revealed today that left-hander Dan Runzler is not completely healed from the lat strain he got in last season’s final game. Runzler is pitching here, but Bochy said the staff wants to limit him to short relief because of the lingering injury. You might recall he was stretched out as a starter last year.

Guess Runz won't be in the sixth starter mix.

With this and Volgelsong going down (even though it's supposedly short term), wouldn't be surprised to see the Giants shop around a little for some starting depth.

LOL.

Bochy: Bruce, what would you like to do?
Bochy: Besides manage? I'd like to be a spring training instructor.
Bochy: Sounds good Bruce. I can squeeze you in for the first few weeks of spring.
Burrell: Hey - what about me?
Bochy: Keep out of this discussion Pat. I'm talking to the smartest man I know.

If Crawford can hit .250/.260, he will be a league average hitter because of his plate discipline and pop. I expect a .250/.350/.410 line from him, which will be more than enough to stick at SS with his D.

Nate, hard to tell. Pre-All star break he put up a .293/.343/.464 line (.807 OPS), but post he had less AB's and injuries that slowed him down. I don't think he can put up those numbers from the first half, but he might be able to. He has been in the league 4 years, enough time for pitchers to adjust to him and for him to adjust back. If he can stay healthy, it's his chance.

With that line he'd have been like the 3rd best healthy hitter on the team.

It is very depressing to realize that your statement is true. Let's hope that a .250/.350/.410 line from ANYONE this year makes that hitter the 9th or 10th best hitter on the team and not the third.

The projections for my expected roster (AVG, OBP, SLG, HR, RBI):

Pagan 280/335/400 8 55 +25 SB
Freddy 285/330/385 5 45
Melky 285/330/420 12 65 +15 SB
Buster 295/365/460 17 80
Panda 305/360/515 24 90
Huff 265/330/420 15 65
Nate 280/330/430 10 40
Craw 245/310/350 6 35

Pill 275/305/450 10 50
Fonty 260/330/390 4 30
Riot 275/330/340 2 40
Belt 270/360/470 20 75
Chez3 250/290/370 9 60

By the projections, Craw would seem to be the 12th or 13th best hitter on the team. I'd love it if 6 of our 8 everyday hitters were 280+, and our bench was full of 270 options.

I don't think these projections are terribly unreasonable.

If we get those numbers and reasonable health, we win 95 games and the division.

But I don't see how you have Melky 3rd and Panda 5th, gotta swap those. Bonds batting 5th in 1993 cost us the division that year.

Overestimating the SLG I guess. Maybe that's something he can reach in his career at some point. But I do think his OBP will still be pretty good.

Melky third was Kuiper's prediction.

I'd value your prediction over Kuiper's. He's got as much insight as we do.

It would be a mistake is all I'm sayin'.

I think Kuip's reasoning is that he wants his speed guys at the top of the order hitting in front of Posey. Angel/Freddy/Melky is a decent catalyst in front of Posey/Panda/Huff (Belt)

Or if Posey/Pablo do their jobs, Cabrera could be the second catalyst for the bottom of the lineup.

I'd bat Cabrera 5th or 6th (6th to break up the lefties).

This. Plus you simply have to bat your best hitter 3rd. Melky might surprise us, but Panda has already proven he can hit well at our park.

Again see what happened in 1993.

And Panda isn't a base stealer but he's not a lumbering base clogger either, he can score from 2nd on a deep single or 3rd on a sac fly for example.
