Look at some advanced metrics, he wasn't as bad on D as some thought.
My guess is though when he is bad, it's really ugly. He is probably also propped up by his rebounding numbers.
If you go back and look at clips, his perimeter defense is pretty bad.
I'm always hesitant when college players can't elevate their teams, but Ayton will be the 3rd #1 pick in a row which really couldn't help his team win.
And Simmons has proved so far to be a great NBA player.
