So Pettitte is going to pretend to retire again?

Exactly what I was thinking. What a typical New York gloryhound. Announce his retirement today to get a little more attention before the end of the season, get loose of MLB testing, get loaded on HGH, skip spring training and come back when the Yankees suck in May.

If I had asked you the same question about John Lackey a year ago, what would you have said?

I don't have a crystal ball.

Now that you ask, I said early in the season that I would be happy if Lackey gave us 180 innings and an ERA of 4.50. Obviously, he has far exceeded those expectations.

The difference between the two is that much of Lackey's poor performance was due to pitching injured in 2011, missing a year to TJ surgery, and dropping about 30 pounds in the offseason.

If CC follows the same path, he would have to miss the entire 2014 season with TJ surgery, lose weight and come back strong in 2015. Can the Yankees afford to lose another pitcher next season?

Another difference is that CC is the Yankees defacto "ace" and Lackey was counted on as nothing more than a 3rd or 4th starter for the Sox this season.

martin should also be on that list

but you cant argue against the impact uehara has made, 69 innings or not, he has had as big an impact as anyone on that list, my opinion

Regardless, Uehara was one of several very good moves by the Sox this offseason. Stephen Drew is batting .248/.331/.441 (109 OPS+) with a 2.8 WAR in 109 games. Napoli's batting .258/.354/.482 with a 126 OPS+ and 3.7 WAR in 135 games. Then they acquired Mike Carp for cash or PTBNL. He's batted .302/.366/.540 (143 OPS+) and 1.2 WAR in 227 PA.

also helps that Ortiz and Ellsbury have been (relatively, at least) healthy and Lackey's looked a lot more like he did in Anaheim than in his first two years in Boston.

Thank you kind sir.

No time to gloat, with only time to celebrate....

Congrats, BigD. :suds:

Question: Are you proud when you see veterans like Nick Punto doing drunken cannonballs into the D'backs pool when they expressly in writing asked them not to take the celebration outside the locker room? I ask honestly. And do you think Vin should make a statement on behalf of the team before the game tonight to apologize?

I was going all-in with the Dodgers if they made it to the WS but now I'm not sure. Are they any different from the dickhead Giants?

I should have known that you people all saw John Lackey's 2013 season coming, and that you all can see Sabathia having an ERA over 9 next year, how silly of me.

Apparently, it is an even money bet that Pettitte will retire again soon, maybe today.

11:17am: The Yankees have issued a press release officially announce Pettitte's retirement. Pettitte offered the following statement within the release:
“I’m announcing my retirement prior to the conclusion of our season because I want all of our fans to know now — while I’m still wearing this uniform — how grateful I am for their support throughout my career. I want to have the opportunity to tip my cap to them during these remaining days and thank them for making my time here with the Yankees so special. I’ve reached the point where I know that I’ve left everything I have out there on that field. The time is right. I’ve exhausted myself, mentally and physically, and that’s exactly how I want to leave this game. One of the things I struggled with in making this announcement now was doing anything to take away from Mariano’s day on Sunday. It is his day. He means so much to me, and has meant so much to my career that I would just hate to somehow take the attention away from him.”

I was hoping that wouldn't make it in here.

Just like yesterday, we seem to be at opposite ends of an issue.

My issue with what happened last night was with the D-Backs going as far to ask the Dodgers not to celebrate on their field. I can not think of hearing this ever before, and have seen LOADS of different away teams celebrate their victory.

So, while I do have issue with this, it is with the D-Backs, and not the Dodgers. And, as to how to best handle this, both now and always, is that if you do not want someone celebrating on your field, WIN THE GAME / games necessary so as it does not occur.

has tony gwynn eaten anyone else lately?

My standard answer to this is, when was the last time anyone saw his brother Chris?

Not exactly gallows humor on my part, but in the same seedy neighborhood.

To put a more positive spin on Gwynn, here is a nugget from "On this date in baseball history"

It was back on this date in 1986 that, tying the National League record for steals in one game, Padres outfielder Tony Gwynn swipes five bases as the Astros beat San Diego, 10–6. During his 20-year career, the .338 lifetime hitter will average only 16 stolen bases per season.

Well, it's going to be interesting. If Vin doesn't make a statement, it means he's embarrassed. If he does make a statement it means he's humiliated.

My guess is that he says nothing.

The days of winning with class and integrity are over. What IS off-limits? So if the D'backs had asked them not to spray paint East LA graffiti all over the locker room, then they should do it?

I'm surprised at you, BigD. I honestly thought you'd be embarrassed about that.

So really, the Dodgers are no different than the Giants. That kind of shit is expected out of a bunch of dickheads like them, but veterans getting drunk and doing bellyflops with their cleats on? I'm embarrassed for you. The D'backs were worried they'd do something juvenile and they were spot on.

As far as the Dodger thing goes...I have a problem with an organization that played "New York, New York" over their sound system after Game 6 of the 2001 World Series complaining about another teams celebration methods. Hey D-Backs, pot meet kettle.
