Better/Best
Time to acccept reality. The Mariner rotation is snake bit this year and it won't stablize until the team is way out of contention for the second wild card.
Having said that, here are what I consider to be the best options to replace Maurer in the rotation.
1. Wandy Rodriguez. DFAed by the Pirates on May 22. The good news - hasn't had an ERA higher than 3.76 in the past six seasons. The bad news - shut down after 12 starts last year and inefffective in 6 starts this year. He is a low-risk type so that makes him a Marineer type.
2. Jordan Pries. Jordan pitched at High Desert last year and by all rights, should be in AA. But when your organization loses Iwakuma, Paxson, Beavan and Walker to injury, and Rameriz is ineffective, it casues a ripple effect felt all the way down to A ball. Pries only got two starts at Jackson before he was needed in Tacoma. However, despite his inexperience above A ball, Pries has beeen the most effective pitcher in the Rainiers rotation.
3. Matt Palmer. 35-year-old right hander suddenly appeared on the Rainiers roster on May 13th. They are quickly trying to get him stretched out. He has 11.2 IPs in three starts. He has 20 career starts in the majoirs with his best season in 2009 with the Angels.
4. Anthony Fernandez. Another guy, like Pries, who would benefit from more time in the minors. But, he's been the Rainiers second best starter this year so he at least needs to be considered.
5. Erasmus Rameriz. I feel obligated to put him in this list but I really don't consider him an option. He has yet to re-discover his success in Tacoma.
