On his GM Street podcast, The Ringer's Mike Lombardi suggested Georgia RB Sony Michel could slip in the draft for medical reasons.

"There's a lot of teams telling me there's a medical concern here, so he could slip a little bit," said Lombardi, a longtime NFL executive who most recently worked for the Patriots. "His medical grade is a little iffy." Lombardi admitted he doesn't know exactly what the medical issue is. On tape, Michel is arguably the second-best running back in this class behind only Saquon Barkley.

Jones would be a nifty RB to have.

Jones is a lot of fun to watch, but I guess the question with him is - Would you use him as a full-time back, and is he too similar to our best RB - Chris Thompson - if you want a change of pace?

I gotta admit I'm not a jones fan (i also don't get the thompson comps at all - Thompson is built around 3rd down work which is jones' weakness). He's a little small not super elusive or powerful. He's fast but i need a little more than just fast. There's at least 8 RBs I'd take over him at this point.

Teams know Lombardi is a dumb fat fuck and an out of the league blow hard. So they know they can use his big ignorant mouth to try to scare other teams away from prospects they like.

Ive got Barkley, Guice, Chubb, Michel, Penny, Johnson, Freeman, and Kelly over him.

different strokes for different folks but I am not a fan of Kelly whatsoever. In fact I'm not even sure Kelly gets drafted. Ballage and Walton(who I really like) are well above Kelly.

1) Barkley
2) Guice
3) Michael
4) Ronald Jones
5) Chubb
6) Penny
7) Walton
8) K.Johnson
9) Freeman
10) Ballage

You seriously think there'd be a change of pace alternating Thompson and Jones? At his weight, nobody's going to use Jones as a high usage RB.

Ive heard some talk of Kelly going day 2. No idea if thats accurate obviously. But he does fit the modern NFL. Hes a great pass catcher and there arent a ton of those in this draft.

Ballage and Walton I need to watch more on but Im pretty meh on both. The order I listed the backs above is my ranking FWIW.

What do you mean by change of pace?

Jones is more of a 1st and 2nd down back at this point while Thompson is a 3rd down back.

Power back vs speed/quickness back. That's the traditional change of pace that's generally thought of as a major positive. Both Jones and Thompson are not power backs. They're explosive lightweights.

And I haven't read anything saying Jones won't be a good 3rd down back.

Whats the point of that though? Just get the best backs you can to do the job. I dont know that theres really anything gained from having one be power and one be speed.

Jones has as big of red flags as a receiver as Chubb does. Like Chubb its possible he could learn to be a pass catcher and end up fine but it will likely never be a true strength and it will likely require some development. Hes simply never proven himself as a pass catching back at any level. Hes also a bit overmatched as a pass blocker due to his size.

Something that caught me off guard was Cooley, who's player evaluation I respect, said Jones II>Guice after breaking down the film.

The point is that a change in type of back throws off the defense - they get used to defending one type of player and then have to adjust to a different type of player - at least that's been the common reasoning - whether it's right or not. It's not like this thinking is anything new. It's a bit like putting in a left-handed off-speed pitcher to relieve a right-handed fastballer. If a team faces the same thing over and over again, they are more likely to successfully adjust. Btw, I think Jones should be very good as a receiver coming out of the backfield in the NFL.

True but it doesnt have to be relative to size.... think of some of the best RB tandems in the NFL

Falcons: Freeman and Coleman neither is a bruiser. Coleman has long speed Freeman has quick short speed.
Saints: Ingram and Kamara. I wouldnt call Ingram a Blount like bruiser. Similar to Freeman has quick short speed.

I think people are convinced change of pace backs need to be 1 big and 1 large because of the thunder and lightning with Tiki Barber and Brandon Jacobs... I disagree.

If you have a big back and quick back you may become predictable. Every time the big back comes in you are running between the tackles, every time the fast back comes in you are running off tackle etc etc.

Just to be clear, if anyone can convince me that any of Guice, Chubb and/or Ballage are best fit for this team considering Gruden's penchant to pass first, second, and most times as well as the OL's weaknesses at run blocking, then I'll go with that guy.

Until then, to me the type guy that fits this team best is an Alvin Kamara type. A couple of years ago I kept insisting that we draft Jay Ajayi, despite his reported knee issues. last year it was Joe Mixon, now it's Ronald Jones II. Ajayi just won a SB with Philly, Mixon, despite a so, so, freshman season, is now the feature back in Cincy and no matter where he goes if healthy, Jones will make others wish that they had taken him, in hindsight. If we get him, Thompson will become the perfect compliment to him because with either in the lineup, there's unpredictability. BTW, with Smith at QB the RPO becomes more lethal with the speed guys like Thompson and Jones.
