Great discussion, guys! Chicago showed how to play teams like the Bruins - heavy on skill and speed, with just enough size and toughness to avoid getting TOTALLY pushed around. Teams need defensive defensemen, yes. Absolutely. But, the best teams have defensive d-men who can skate and/or make a decent first pass. Grossmann doesn't do either well, and this liability outweighs his defensive play at 5 on 5, at least it has this year. Schenn can't skate but usually makes a decent first pass. Coburn does both well, at least when he's not over thinking the play and trying to do too much at once.
Either way, I think that between Grossmann, Schenn, Meszaros and Coburn, we are physically built more to win a seven game series than we are any one game. These guys should really be able to punish opposing forwards across a longer time frame and wear down the other team.
The key is, those guys can't be in the defensive zone too long or other teams will be the ones punishing and wearing them down - I've seen this happen a few times
and in the playoffs, when the game gets tighter and more physical, i want nicklas grossmann in the flyers lineup.

They just need to be separating guys from pucks with regularity and the forwards must backcheck, collapse and do their part defensively as well.
agree w/ all of, especially the bold. a lot of times the flyers get hemmed in their own zone it's because a forward made a bad second pass, or didn't support the dman enough, making the 1st pass a difficult one
Agreed that the problem is not entirely the d-men, and that the forwards need to do a better job of assisting the breakout. However, the d-men themselves are definitely a significant part of the problem, too.
How big of a problem are our D Men or how big of a problem do we really have in other areas also being that were 29-16-6 since we started 1-7. If we keep winning at that rate i love our whole team especially our Defense, forwards and goalies.
look who's mr. optimism coming off the olympic break!
I thought the season was lost and the way they have been playing especially coming off last season and the first 8 games this year i am definately pleasantly suprised and behind these guys 100%.
Personally, my concern comes from the fact that while yes, they closed out prior to the break playing great hockey and winning 4 in a row, the 10 or so games before that were pretty poor. Overall yes, they've been pretty good since the abysmal start, but let's not pretend that they don't have significant deficiencies. We're debating whether or not there are moves out there that can help this team with our primary goal - winning the Cup. We're not saying that the team is bad, we're just looking to give them the best chance that we can to win, whatever that may be.
