Everyone is assuming ET signs a deal that a team can get out of with minimal cap hit or issues if he is a problem. So that means Of course an incentive laden deal. But, It also means he may not be signed until after week 1 if interested teams don’t want to guarantee his salary. If he is on the roster this weekend his base salary guarantees. So it would make sense for teams to try and sign him after week 1. Based on this, I wonder if the Cowboys and/or other teams are more interested than it appears and are just waiting and hoping he is still available after the weekend.

Cowboys carry $12.5M in dead money, around $8.5M in cap space

The bevy of moves made by the Dallas Cowboys to finagle their way to a 53-man roster and 17-man practice squad come with a cost. Literally. Releasing players and signing replacements all have an impact on the cap and after the cuts and waivers made this past weekend, a fresh look at the club’s bottom line is prudent.

Thanks to a series of releases, the amount of dead money on the Cowboys cap for 2020 has ballooned to just under $12.5 million. That’s a huge figure and most of it is legitimate, some of it isn’t their fault and a portion is just funny money. When it, as well as the practice squad and other considerations are added to the cost of the 53-man roster all come together, it leaves Dallas with around $9 million in cap space left to spend.

Here’s how it all breaks down, thanks to figures from Over The Cap.

Center Travis Frederick is the biggest chunk of dead money, incurred after the multi-year Pro Bowler retired this offseason. His prorated bonuses count just under $5 million on this year’s cap (and another $6 million in 2021).

Two 2020 free agents who were released — one for injury and the other for being not good – DT Gerald McCoy and safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, add $1 million and $2.25 million in dead money respectively. If and when Clinton-Dix signs with another team this year, it’s likely $1 million comes off his total for offsets in his deal, but for now it sits on Dallas’ cap. Kicker Kai Forbath also falls into this category, but for a smaller impact of just $137,500.

2017 first-round pick Taco Charlton, released last camp, still impacts this year’s cap. The prorated signing bonus allocation from his rookie deal sticks another $1.3 million on the total. 2019 fifth-round CB Michael Jackson falls in line here as well for $227,000, as does 2018 fifth-round QB Mike White ($109,000).

The funny money comes in for players who are either still on the 53-man roster or the practice squad. They were released, so the signing bonus allocations count as dead money; they’ve inked new contracts upon their return.

UDFAs RonDell Carter ($131k) and LB Francis Bernard ($103k) both made the practice squad. Meanwhile corner C.J. Goodwin ($337k), linebacker Joe Thomas ($150k) and linebacker Justin March ($137k) are all back on the big club.

OTC shows the Cowboys as having $11.9 million in space remaining, but this does not include the new salaries for these three players, all around $1 million, nor the last couple of practice squad members. That should bring their spendable money down to around $8.5 million to enter the year.

Teams like to have around $4 million – $5 million to spend on in-season free agent signings.

Of course it's also a reminder that we drafted Jeffcoat over Marino...

I remember being upset that we did not draft Marino. Very upset. I was never a fan of Danny White. He never came through in big moments. But if we draft Marino we likely do not get the Triplets and still have two rings. It worked out for the best.

We have been kicking the can down the road the last week or two, but this is when you need to do it based on the decrease in the cap next year and this is what almost every team will likely do.

This year's cap hit is really meaningless other than to calculate how much you have to roll into next year because teams are just rolling it and not spending it, but with the roll we are now around $34M in cap space next year. Plenty to sign Dak and do a couple of other things if needed. I suspect Dak's cap hit next year will be around $25M or so if a LT deal is agreed to

And add to that the expected big bump in the cap once the new TV deals go into effect and this is kind of where we are right now.

I know many probably don't agree with me and that I have said this a few times already, but I also see a very good chance that we cut ties with Cooper in 2 years if Gallup and Lamb prove their value. The contract was structured to do so and it is the perfect contract to restructure (this year or next) if we need cap space and IF we plan on keeping him long term. It's great to have 3 good WRs, but not at the expense of shoring up other positions with bigger needs and in a cap world you can't try to keep everyone.
