Pretty interesting read. Don't know if I agree with all but...

“I spoke to almost a third of the general managers today and I was a little bit surprised to find out that there is a group of them that has gone to [NHL commissioner] Gary Bettman and [deputy commissioner] Bill Daly and made it very clear that they are very unhappy with the way that Brendan Shanahan has handled [the length] of the suspensions," Francis said.

“The [suspensions] are pretty harsh and a lot of people agree with that -- fans and media are definitely on board -- but there’s a group of GMs that have gone and complained. They wanted the bar set high -- they made that clear in their agenda in the summer. However, they didn’t want it 'doubled and tripled' in the words of one general manager who really teed off on Brendan today.

“I spent the whole week talking to as many players as I could and almost all of them agree that it’s changed the way they play the game. It’s a feeling-out process, there’s some adjustments being made, but these are the growing pains that everybody knew the NHL would have to go through when they were getting tougher on headshots."

I think a lot of people around the league assumed these suspensions would only apply to the Cookes, Otts, and Carcillos etc... of the league.

Little did they realize that isn't the case and now they are jacked off.

C'est la vie

Wonder what those GM's will say when one of their top players is taken out with one of those hits.

I agree, the rules are there for player safety and I think the players will catch on soon, knowing that the league is serious in punishing offenders.

The rules apply to everyone. Even star players can be suspended & should be if they mess up. I wonder if Howson in Colombus is one of those GM's who's pissed off?? Wiz was a repeat offender. That's just the way the cookie crumbles.:D:

It's just one of those things where you can't please everyone. Like someone said they should just adapt and get used to it play the game and STFU.

I'm guessing Scott Howson was one of them. He just signed Wiz to a very expensive contract and he's out for the first 8 games of the season.

Interesting... You know, this will protect a lot of those GMs' jobs since it will reduce the risk of head injuries to the players they sign to these contracts, increasing their likelihood of success. Perhaps they should look at the big picture...

Seriously.

And make their players wear their helmets properly! :thumb:

Yep. I've seen more players twinkle-toeing in the corners and side stepping instead of delivering clean open ice hits more the first five games then I have in the last five seasons.

Adapt.

Toe picks and sequins next?

At least he's put down the heavy hammer of pre-season for a more restrained "regular season" one. A two handed chop to the mouth? 2 games. If that was pre-season it would have been 7.

It stands to reason that he has a third "Andy Dufresne" signature model rock hammer for the playoffs.

Time will tell but I think you're probably right 43.

So he spoke to almost 10 GMs and some of them weren't happy? I have my doubts that the 10ish GMs that were spoken to were randomly selected. My guess is that overall, most GMs are happy with his work. I could be wrong but I consider these "numbers" meaningless other than we know he isn't pleasing everybody. But is that even humanly possible?

On the bright side Shanahan is the type of guy that a few GMs bitching won't change his work. He's doing a fantastic job and the supplemental discipline is so much better than when colorectal was running things. Those GMs can go fuck themselves.
