Missed out on the overpayment period sans Doan (so far). They want a winger for Crosby and a need to sure up the defense. Outside of a trade, which would suck, I don't see this happening. Any thoughts?

I hate that this is no longer just a joke.

I think the need for a top-4 d-man is the bigger issue. The problem is, that's an overpriced market right now.

Maybe one of the young Penguins prospects can seize the opportunity and step into a top-4 defense position. Sure, there may be a few gaffes along the way, but that's just part of the learning and developing process.

I don't see that happening. I fully expect them in the playoffs. I'm just talking about winning it all. That's the only prize.

Fuck the Caps over by signing John Carlson to an absurd offer sheet.

Or fuck the Caps over by signing Semin right as he seems to have turned the corner on playing better defense. God I hate Semin. He is going to f us one way or the other.

Oh, and no way Johnny C is leaving for Pitt - he's one half of Carlzner!! ;)

I really don't think the Pens are in bad shape at all. Yeah yeah yeah, I know, lost Staal and Z and replaced them with Sutter... and HOPEFULLY a full season of Sid and Letang.

Pens don't need a top 4 defenseman (it would be nice), but they need one of their prospects (and vets) to play to their ability. I DO expect some type of movement in the backend, probably small scale, but perhaps a top prospect part of package, but too much depth, will lose some to waivers (where pens will have to pay portion of salary)

Letang-Orpik
Martin-Nisky
Engellend - Strait
Lovejoy/Burtuzzo

if the Pens don't make any moves on the backend, I can not foresee Despres or Morrow making the big squad, they do not have to clear waivers. If things don't work out during the season, look for a trade, have prospects, some vets, TK, etc...I really hate UFA signings... not sure how healthy he was or how he played last year, but Eaton is a free agent, knows the system, if the Pens need help he can surely be a 5-6 or stop gap for injuries, but again, too many D already IMO... if Weber goes to Philly, perhaps Martin to Nashville?... Opens up roster spot... but now leaves you thin with NHL experience, esp if/when injuries occur.

Up front... I would hate the Doan signing at 4 yrs 6 per... Hate it at 3 yrs.. but.. no hate it at 3 yrs.. assuming no doan.. do not want Semin... so I would be looking at trades then.. potential UFAs next season (ideally RFAs or under contract but may be harder)... I'm looking at Calgary.... I don't know the situation up there... but someone would look good playing next to crosby... again.

Dare to dream. I really think what they want is someone in their 20's to play with Sid. This way, they don't have to go through the process again in 2-4 years.

Dreaming is fun, my couch is comfy.

IMO, 2-4 yrs one of two things will happen:
1.) Bennett will be playing with Sid
2.) Letang/Despres/Marrow will be traded (one of them)for a Neal type player. Young RFA goal scoring winger...

I have no idea what they are thinking, but i am thinking they want to win now... if I have the chance (dare to dream) of acquiring an aging, but skilled and cup hungry canadian, I will.

They do need some help upfront... I don't think DJ or Tangradi are the answer... anxiously waiting for what shero does next.

The thing is: we have too many defenseman that can't go down without waivers. A trade pretty much HAS to happen.

I can see that. The thing that we don't know is Shero's faith in Bennett in the future. If he believes, he has the option to hold.

What do they do:

1.) try to move Martin (risky, no real NHL depth left)
2.) package a high rated prospect for NHL ready talent
3.) trade lovejoy/strait/Sneep, etc for a late rd draft pick

I think they should consider #2 with a combo of #3. Obviously we have insane depth, and I'm not 100% sure just how long they wanted to hold onto all of these guys. Rev/Strait/Sneep are the issue honestly. Nice 6-7 guys, but we don't need all of those.

obviously i'm heavily biased, but that defense looks atrocious to me.. letang, orpik, and niskanen are alright, even good, martin might be ok but not if he played like he did last year.. from what i've seen the only thing engelland does well is fight, and i'll admit i haven't seen much of strait

Hope he has faith in him, invested a 1st rd in him... but kuehnhackel, ferriero, Uher, Thompson, Gibbons...and Bennett... add Veiulleux (if he can stay healthy) and even DJ and Tangradi.. only really need one of those players to reach their potential, perhaps exceed their potential...
