Skip Schumaker will miss a month

Associated Press
GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Skip Schumaker dislocated his left shoulder and will miss about a month.

Schumaker left the game between the Reds and Royals on Friday after making a diving attempt to cut off a line drive hit by Angel Franco in the left center field gap in the seventh inning.

Schumaker's glove stuck in the hard ground on the Arizona field. The injury is similar to the injury suffered on Opening Day last year when Ryan Ludwick's hand stuck in the ground at Great American Ball Park while sliding into third base.

The veteran utility player signed a two-year contract with the Reds on Nov. 26. He is expected to provide backup at second base and the outfield.

Schumaker, 34, was hitting .441 this spring with a home run and seven RBIs.

The beat goes on for the Reds. Not that Skip Schumaker was the key to the season, but this is getting ridiculous. The question won't be how well the Reds do so much as whether there will be anybody left on the roster by the end of the season...

Skippy's main role was to relieve BP ... off and on. For the moment, that's not really a high priority. But it does mean that Heisey is the likely guy to play CF if Hamilton doesn't get it done.

Bench strength. and experienced pinch hitters are important. So yes this does hurt the team

If rather have Martinez than Ludwick. He's about $9M cheaper, 20 years younger and has had 5 fewer shoulder surgeries.

Skip was insurance in case Hamilton did a Corey Patterson impersonation, or BP decides to go on strike until he gets a Votto type contract. Heisey is hitting HR like he's on the Braun diet, so maybe it won't matter for awhile.

I'm more concerned with having to cut 6 guys off the 40 man roster to field a team for the first month.

I think Chappy and Marshall go on the 60-day.
You can retro Skippy back to about the 15th so he could conceivably be on the 60-day.
Broxton can pitch, he just hasn't. Same for Latos.

Obviously Bernadina takes Skippo's place.
Jason Bourgeois would replace Hamilton, I think.

Geez, I know I've aged ... remember when Shawon Dunston broke in.
Today, his son got a hit in the 9th off of Ondrusek.

Yeah the only serious injury we have is Chappy,RIGHT NOW. Hopefully our guys go through there rehab and are back within a couple weeks, With the exception of Skip (Probably a month) Chapman (Probably Entire 1st half). In April you just gotta stay a floating and we will do just that.

If Cueto and Bailey are healthy and Latos and Mesoraco are back healthy in a couple weeks, not so much to worry about. Hoover will do fine if he has leads in the 9th. Pena and Heisey can hold on for a couple weeks. I dont think Hannahan is a loss. Marshall and Broxton weren't there much last year, and the pitching was ok without them. Skip might be more important than you might believe.

If pitching isn't healthy though, it could be a long season. I don't have much faith in the offense making up for pitching giving up 5-6 runs a game.
