It's a short week this week as the Niners have their home opener vs. the Giants.

The Giants got blown out in week 1 by Dallas where the wheels just fell off. Then they fell behind the tanking Cardinals 28-7 in week 2 before coming all the way back to win an improbable victory.

Against AZ, the Giants showed a remarkable turnaround in the 2nd half. There are numerous reasons for this. There are rumors that the HC Daboll took over the playcalling in the 2nd half. He denies that is the case, however. The Giants changed their pass protections, got Darren Waller more involved, and Daniel Jones started running more. Jones ended the day 26 of 37 for 321yds, 2 TDs, and 1 INT for a 103 passer rating, and he ran 9 times for 59 yards and another TD. Waller caught 6 balls for 76 yards and he will be a key.

Sadly, they lost their star RB S.Barkely to a sprained ankle late in the game. He will miss this week's game in SF and it looks like former Niner Matt Breida will be filling in for him. The Giants LT and LG might also miss the game. Their LT is dealing with a nagging hamstring injury and wasn't able to play against Arizona and consideirng the road trip and short week, he might not play against SF either. Their LG Bredeson left the AZ game with a concussion and he might not be cleared to play this soon afterward.

On offense, the Niners will have to focus on the ground game, as both Dallas and Arizona were able to run the ball against the NYG defense. Connor had more than 100 yards on the ground at 4.6ypc in the AZ game. The Niner running game should be able to work well against the Gmen. In the passing game, we might finally see Kittle get more involved as Zach Ertz really lit up the Giants defense, catching 6 balls for more than 50 yards. In addition, the Niner OLine will be challenged by the talented Giants Dline. Dexter Lawrence in the middle will have to get the Aaron Donald treatment, as he can be very disruptive. The Cards managed to shut out K.Thibodeaux, so let's hope he isn;'t matched up on McKivitz too much.

On defense, the Niner pass rush must show up for this game. With the Giants ailing on the OLine, this is the time for the Niner pass rush to take advantage. The Cowboys got sacks all over the place and even the lowly Cards got 3 sacks and were after Jones all day (blitzing heavily to do it though), so if the Niner pass rush is for real, this is the week to show it. Having said that, Jones is a mobile QB and we will have to stay in our rush lanes or he will gash us on the ground. In addition, look for the Giants to go to Waller early and often, so we have to be prepared to slow him down despite the matchup problem he poses.

Niners open as 10 point favorites. That is a huge line in the NFL. This is a game the Niners should win. But we all know what that's worth.

Well, what do we think?

True, the Niners SHOULD win. But the defense has struggled in the past against mobile QBs.

IIRC, the last few mobile Qbs we played were Hurts, Mariota, Mahomes, Wilson, and Fields. We lost every one of those games.

Keep in mind that the Giants Defense has the highest blitz rate in the NFL. So, Purdy and the Oline can expect extra rushers early and often.

So this game will be similar to the Dolphins game where Purdy faced a lot of extra pressure and some exotic blitz looks.

IMO the 49ers will win but not cover the spread. Injuries and travel are in our favor, we should win this game.

Don't care if we win by one point as long as we win. No team plays like champs every single game, so this is where a "B" game should still be ok. But "B" game doesn't include turnovers, it includes a FEW errant throws, a few missed blocks, a few drops, a few missed tackles. :-)

The Arizona game is where i might start to think "trap"?

Coming into this season... there was a lot of optimism for the Gmen. They're coming off making the playoffs and (supposedly) are improved talent wise. Also they have some stability on the coaching side.

The first 2 games, however, have been rough. Real rough. The Giant run defense has been most disappointing to me... followed closely by the continued O-line issues.

The Giants have to make an adjustment to stop the run. From what I've seen in the first 2 games... DC Wink Martindale has been playing things safe and soft to try to protect a couple of rookie CB's. Time to take more chances. Theoretically, we've got some big bodies to hold up in this department... the 9ers are a huge test though.

Having our all-pro starting left tackle (Thomas) injured in the first few minutes of the season has been a disaster. He is arguably the player we could least afford to lose. The line already has multiple question marks at other positions. The Cowboy defense blew us up Week 1.

That said: the Giants at least showed some goddamn heart in the 2nd half last week. That's something. And the offense does appear somewhat improved in terms of playmaking.

Still... really tough match-up for the Giants.

There's always hope. :hope:

Of course there's hope, chit happens in the NFL starting with turnovers. IF the 49ers can avoid them we should be ok.

But not underestimating the Giants even without a few top players. Yes, they made it to the play-offs and coaching staff seems to be good enough.

RB Barkley out
LG Bredeson out
LT Thomas game time decision
DE Ojulari game time decision
Looks like all of them will be out for the Gmen.

RB Barkley out
LT Thomas out
LG Bredeson out
Edge Ojulari out

So both starters on the Giants' left side of the Oline will miss this game. The Niner front 4 better own the LOS in this one b/c the Rams sliced the secondary up for the first half last week. Without Barkley, more of the game will fall on the Giants passing game. While Danny Dimes is no Matt Stafford, our secondary is still the defense's weak link. I expect the Giants to have Jones running the ball, get the ball to Waller a lot and to take big swings and go for big plays just like they did in the 2nd half against AZ.

I think we'll lean on the running game a lot in this one. Not only b/c of Aiyuk's injury, but also to slow down the giant pass rush. The Giants have been poor in run defense in the first two weeks of the year too. Dallas RB Pollard had 5ypc vs. the Giants and Arizona RB Connor ran for 100+yds at a 4.6ypc clip. The Niner running game should find some good traction in this game.

Report from Schefty that WR Brandon Aiyuk is not expected to play tonight against the Giants.

That'll be a big blow to the offense, as he's really grown into the role at flanker. Maybe it's better to rest him for this short-week game so he can be healthier for the upcoming games agianst Dallas, Cleveland, Minny, and CIncy. Still, this is a blow to the offense.

Still, one would expect that an offense with Deebo, Kittle, and CMC would be enough to keep the Niners afloat for the Giants game.

Overall, the Niners got an 18 point win over the Giants on a short week. It was far from perfect, as there were serious miscues on offense, defense and ST.

The Niner offense sputtered in the first half imo, but picked up in the 2nd half. 30 points and 441 total yards of offense was a great output and the Niner offense dominated TOP (2 to 1), the Niner offense stalled out in the redzone several times and it seemed like the offense was struggling for every yard.
--At halftime, the niners had more first downs (14-5), more yards (242-88) and more plays (41-24), controlling the clock for 20:00 of the first 30 minutes. SF had more rushing yards (89) than the Giants had total yards. The niners would’ve been up by even more than 17-6 if they hadn’t stalled out in the redzone 3 times, settling for FGs at the NYG 11, 3, and 18 yardlines.
--the Niners gamed 215 of their 310 passing yards after the catch
--For some reason, the offense had no answer for Micah McFadden. The guy was all over the field last night. He led the Giants in tackles with 9 solo and FOUR TFL.
--it’s good to see that the offense did well even though there is a lot of room for improvement. Purdy, penalties, pass protection, getting the damn snap right, receivers dropping passes.
--honestly, I think this game was a little embarrassing b/c they allowed a really bad-looking Giants team to hang around for 3 quarters. For goodness sake, the Giants were without their best offensive player and the left side of their Oline, the Giants trotted out 2 rookie CBs, and the Giants D kept stalling out the Niner offense in the redzone. Honestly, an embarrassing win.

Purdy was 25 of 37 for 310yds and 2 TDs. Ending with a QBR of 58.3 and a passer rating of 111.3. It looks really good, but it was far from Brock’s best game. He was uncharacteristically erratic early on
--Purdy had 39 attempts, and the NYG blitzed him on 33 of those. A blitz rate of 84.6%! That is crazy! It resulted in 2 sacks and some incompletions, but against the blitz, Purdy went 20 of 31 for 247yds and 2 TDs with no INTs, no fumbles.
--Brock’s TD to Deebo was 27yds in the air. Yes, Brock can make deeper throws.
--On a 3rd down in the redzone, with pass pressure in his face, Purdy rifled a bullet to Bell on a short out route in the endzone for a TD
--On the first drive of the game, it's 3rd and 8, and Purdy hits JJ for 24 yards up the seam!
--he threw 3 balls that could’ve been picked, but Kittle broke up the first one and Deebo broke up the second one (in the EZ) and the 3rd was batted up into the air that Ronnie Bell managed to catch
--When Jimmy was the QB, if the team passed the ball 35-40 times, that usually meant a loss. Looks like those days are dead and gone.

CMC had 85yds and a TD on 18 carries and caught 5 balls for 34 more yards. His only real flaw was that he dropped a TD pass in the 4th quarter and the drive ended in a FG.
--CMC got some rest in this one, only playing on 61% of the offensive snaps, as Mitchell got 11 carries for 42yds and then Mason iced the game at the end. But still, CMC got 23 touches in this one that is still a lot for him. We’re gonna have to reduce his workload. Hopefully he gets some rest next week if the Niners get a good lead on Arizona
--Juice even got a carry for 3 yards on a 3rd and short. He needs to be a bigger part of the offense.
--TDP was a healthy scratch yet again. It’s looking like 3rd rd RB is a bust and with Sermon that makes 2 in a row. That’s a scouting problem that needs to be looked at.

Deebo had 6 catches for 129yds and a TD. Deebo was breaking tackles all night and had huge YAC yardage. With Aiyuk out, Deebo had to come up big and he did just that.
--His 27yd TD catch was against tight coverage and showed some great concentation
--JJ got his usual 2 balls for 31 yards, with both catches gaining 1st downs. However, JJ also dropped a pass on 3rd and 8.
--Ronnie Bell made his debut on offense, catching a TD on a short out route in the EZ. He showed good hands b/c Purdy threw a bullet. In total, he had 2 catches for 24 yards. Bell also had a couple of nice plays on ST, making a great tackle on a punt coverage to pin the giants back deep.

Kittle had 7 catches for 90 yards and showed great YAC out there. Dragging defenders with him.
--early on Kittle also showed great awareness on a pass that was about to be picked off, but he broke up the interception.
--Kittle dropped a pass on 2nd and 15, but on the next drive, he got the first down on 3rd and 12.

The Oline paved the way for some good runs, but it also gave up 2 sacks.
--The NYG haven't gotten a sack all season, but the Niners gave one up very early in the 1st quarter
--Burford, continuing his shitty season, gave up the 2nd sack to go with several missed blocks
--TW was off last night. He had 3 penalties in the first half and missed a couple of blocks in the short game. He should’ve also been thrown out of the game for throwing a punch into a Giants facemask. It’s a miracle he wasn’t tossed.
--Banks had a pretty good night. His block sprung Deebo for the 30 yard game on 3rd and 15
--Burford and Brendel struggled in the middle imo
--the is the 2nd game in a row where we had a strange, bobbled or dropped snap. It looked like Brendel snapped the ball and Purdy wasn’t expecting it. B/c the ball fell straight down, which usually means it’s on the QB. Was it Brendel snapping early or was it Purdy not being ready? Either way, Purdy recovered the ball on what could’ve been a momentum swinging turnover.

The defense did a great job overall, with the exception of the lone Giants TD drive.
--Giants had only 150 total yards had only 10 first downs all night! The Giants were only 3 of 12 on 3rd down.
--Since their left side of the Oline was out of commission, the Giants passing game was almost exclusively short throws. That’s why Jones was 22 of 32, but had only 137yds. 137yds on 32 pass attempts is pitiful. They were not risking much in the way of deeper throws b/c it meant Jones had to hold the ball longer.
--the Giants lone TD drive was a 37yd drive where 22 of those yards came on a DPI call on Demo. That penalty kep the giants on the field and put them in position to get their only TD.
--the Hufunga INT came off what looked like a drop by Darren Waller
--The Giants could not run the ball at all. Breida only had 4 carries for 17 yards and a TD
--Jones had only 2 rushing attempts for 5 yards. So much for worrying about him on the ground. I really wonder why they didn’t try more runs and rollouts for Jones.

The DLine did its job. With the Giants going almost exclusively to short passing, they didn’t get a lot of chances at sacks, but they did stop the run well and put some consistent pressure on Jones. we missed a lot of sacks by just inches.
--Bosa got his first sack of the year, swallowing Jones near the goal line when Jones tried to roll out. He also had 2 QB hits and a handful of pressures. Maybe he is getting back into the groove?
--Hargrave had 3 tackles and nabbed another sack on a great rush up the middle. His sack came on 3rd and 3 and ended a NYG drive. Hargrave spent a lot of time in the Giants backfield, as on 3rd and 7, he collapsed the pocket and forced Jones to throw the ball away. So far, he’s worth every dime we paid to get him.
--Kinlaw showed up and got some pressures in this game. He posted 4 pressures on the night. Maybe Kinlaw has realized that this is his FA season (and the Niners are not going to resign him), so he has to put something on film other than injuries.

Something is wrong with Greenlaw. He seems to have an unnecessary roughness penalty in each of the last few games. He’s got to be smarter, but OTOH, it looked like the play was dead b/c Ward had the runner wrapped up, but the official was late blowing the whistle and Greenlaw hit the player just as the whistle was blown. I’m not sure on that call—I’m leaning toward a bad flag. The same guy who blew the whistle late also threw that flag. Looks like a crap call.
--Burks came into the game and tied Gipson for the lead in tackles with 5. And Burks also had 2 TFL. So far, we’ve not lost anything with Al-Shaair leaving in FA. Burks has done well.
--Warner had only 2 solo tackles in this one

Our Dbs weren’t challenged down the field all that much. As the Giants passing game was almost all short stuff. Only gave up 137 passing yards, so the secondary did pretty well.
--no Giant receiver or RB had more than 32 yards receiving. That is astounding.
--Demo had a rather rough game imo. He got beat early for 17yds and on one of the deeper plays, Demo got flagged for PI. It’s usually a bad sign when a DB has as many tackles as the LBs do (5)
--Ward had 4 tackles and 2 pbu. Ward had a better day this week than last week.
--Oliver had another pretty solid day. Looked like he played mostly over the slot in this one. It’s still surprising how well he’s played in the regular season after such a bad preseason. Weird.
--Hufanga got another INT, his second of the season. It’s troubling to see that he was on the bike for some time on the sidelines trying to loosen something up. And Odum had to come in for him.

Moody was rock steady, hitting all of his FGs. Wishnowsky only punted 3 times, getting 2 of them downed inside the 20.
--BOTH of the CBs we elevated for this game, Swilling and Jean-Charles had a ST penalty, one pinning the Niners back inside the freaking 5 yard line. Is the FO regretting not hanging onto and elevating Q.Knight (now a cardinal) instead of these yahoos?

The coaches did pretty well in this one I think.
--Wilks called much more man-to-man coverage in this one than usual. Mostly on 3rd downs, which really worked as the Giants only converted 25% on 3rd down.
--Shanny was calling a lot of shorter passes and screens to combat the blitz-heavy Giants defense and consider the YAC potential of the Niners that is a smart move. Still, I expected the offense to be much sharper and more prepared for the Giants than we were.
--The penalties we had were concerning. 6 flags accepted for 71 yards.

Overall, I think it was an embarrassing win. The Niners looked sloppy, but we still scored 30 points and held the giants to just 1 TD. Good teams beat bad teams even though they played far below their potential. Oh well. We got the win.

Next up is the Cardinals. It's in SF, so that will help and the Niners get extra days of rest for just having played on Thursday. The cards are tanking but they have shown signs of life in both of their games this year, even having 4th quarter leads in both games. So they're not gonna roll over and die, so the Niners have to be ready for a blitz happy defense and an offense focused on the running game and the big play.

@Niner Outlaw Normally I'm right with you on analysis, but I wouldn't call that an embarrassing win at all. Short week... blitz happy defense... potential trap game. In the NFL a win is a win. They still crushed them on the scoreboard, dominated the clock and eventually got the offense going. Outside of two bad plays by the defense and ST, the GMen may have only scored 3pts.

The right side of the oline needs to clean some things up. I think in the first half Kyle leaned too much on the passing game. Something like three series in a row in the first half they didn't even attempt a run. Vets like Greenlaw and Williams need to keep their cool. I thought Williams might actually get ejected at the end of the first half - totally looked like he threw a puch. Lucky he only got a personal foul. Once they made some adjustments they controlled the game, imo. Wasn't pretty, but like you said - good teams win games like that. It's not like they squeaked one out.

I'm still waiting for the full-on crappy game. It seems like a statistical inevitability. CMC and Purdy seemed to have materially tipped the scale on that front, though.

I agree with you, a win is a win no matter the opponent. We beat the Giants as we should but IMO just short of a "crushing" win.

But i also get what Outlaw is saying, it APPEARED to be a bad performance due to the first half. I believe that poor start carried over despite a better 2nd half. Purdy wasn't sharp in the 1st half so we fans were thinking how bad the offense is playing. We all expected a 'blowout' from the get go but it wasn't...............more so, the appearance of a poor game.

Then you look at the 2nd half or even the game stats, and it was a much better performance than it appeared. I didn't realize how many pressures the D-line put up, very good even without more sacks.

Ok a full-on crappy game could happen because no team plays solid for 20 games. That 'crappy' game will have turnovers and too many penalties, and the 49ers will beat themselves. Hopefully it doesn't happen against Dallas, Philly, or a West opponent.

That is a good point. Purdy and the Niners will eventually lay an egg. It's gonna happen, just a question of when. Maybe we've already seen Purdy's low? Teh Dallas playoff game was just ok, and the first half against Washington was downright bad. Maybe those are his lows? If those are his lows, I think we're in great shape!

Wow, what a breakdown from you. Don’t usually see this detail on SH, impressed

Thought I’d share, thanks for beating up on the Gnats… for some reason they (particularly Jones) always has a banner day when facing us… grrrrrr
