Not how it works though. Most teams call every team ahead of them and behind them to get trade parameters or at least values those teams would expect in a trade already somewhat set up. So it isn't 10 minutes and make as many phone calls as you can. It is we already know what teams are offering and whether we would want to trade back or up when the time comes.
Which is essentially the equivalent of revealing your hand.
I know they asked the Broncos GM about this last week. He said he spent the entire week talking to almost every other GM in the NFL about trades and that the week of the draft is about figuring out which trade scenarios are actually serious or not. So 10 minutes is plenty to get the work done that is needed. I think the other big thing is the NFL would lose so much viewership if they made the picks 30 minutes long. It would be unwatchable.
I'm looking at it from a strategic point of view. I like the idea of not rushing the person who is making the pick.

I agree that my idea might screw up the whole event from a viewer's point of view though.

How does a team decide what to do if their target player gets taken? Would 10 minutes be enough time for you to negotiate a trade?
How about in the 3 or so months leading up to the draft figure out who they want and a couple contingency plans (which can include potential trades)?

It doesn't reveal your hand. If you call all 31 other teams to gauge what it would take then all you have done is show you are willing to move if the opportunity presents itself. Just like all 31 other teams are doing exactly the same thing.

I think they'd trade the pick.

That would take a few minutes as they will get multiple calls as soon as the Browns turned in their pick. Unlikely the Browns and Titans pass IMO.

I disagree though, I think the Giants would run that pick in if he was available at 3.

It's a hypothetical, about any year. Suddenly there would be a brand new bidding war. Ten minutes is thin and there's no way to extend it.

An interesting game-within-a-game; whichever front office is best equipped to handle that scenario has an advantage.

They have trade up and down discussions with most teams regarding such outcomes prior to the draft. Teams know the expected cost unless it gets bid upwards.

The NFL introduced time limits for draft picks in 1992 to streamline the process and prevent excessive delays. Before this, teams had no strict time constraints, leading to lengthy drafts. The initial limits were 15 minutes for first-round picks, 10 minutes for the second round, and 5 minutes for rounds 3-7. These were adjusted over time, with notable changes in 2008 (reduced to 10 minutes for round 1, 7 minutes for round 2) and 2015 (shortened to 4 minutes for round 7). The goal was to maintain pace and enhance the fan experience.

Before the time limits were imposed, it was not uncommon for teams to take as much as an hour to make their selection. Not only that, but up until 1977, the draft was 17 rounds (with far fewer teams); then, until 1994 it was 12 rounds (with fewer teams than now, but not by as much). Since 1994, there have only been 7 rounds.

That would have been brutal to try to follow.

They've slowed it down a lot in recent years. Teams still have just ten minutes to decide what they want to do though. I wouldn't mind them slowing it down even more for the first round. I personally like it when they give teams time to decide whether to make a pick or make a trade. What do you think?
die in a fucking fire with this opinion.

Too long already. teams have months to get their plans together.
THIS!

However, to add: How many times is "THE PICK IS IN" shown on the graphic and ESPN talking heads get another 8 minutes to ramble and then a commercial, before coming back to 3 more minutes of rambling - before they get to the pick.

I don't mind the time-limit as is, but once the pick is in - it needs to be announced. Cut in over the talking heads. Don't go to commercial. Figure it out - you can get a post-draft show to keep revenue, or whatever, but having "THE PICK IS IN" shown for 13 minutes is flat out stupid.

ESPN stretches it out for viewership and they have made it a whole weekend event and it is ridiculous.

they have turned it into a spectacle, which is what the NFL loves.

I don't even mind it's over 3 or 4 days or whatever. I'm fine with that, but once the pick is in...they need to get to the pick within the next 30-45 seconds. It's comical how much longer they let Kiper drone on about guys, and especially guys that weren't even the most recent of picks. I think 80% of his time was spent talking about Sanders...who didn't even get drafted!

I dunno why anyone is watching ESPN these days for the draft. NFL Network is free on basically like every single subscription service.

ESPN has done this for YEARS. Just focus on talking about specific players and then doing barely any commentary on any DL/OL/ILB or basically players who don't generate fantasy football fags (those who ONLY follow football for FF).

Exactly. How many times do we see "The pick is in" and it's announced 10 minutes later. Have to make time for the inane interviews. "Are you happy to be drafted by XXXX?" what are they going to say "Fuck no, I don't want to play in that cow town." Used to be 15 minutes and the pick would be announced immediately. None of this silliness

I love how they try to guard Goodell before each pick with stuff like "someone died, respect them" or "here's the military, you don't hate America do you?"

it's so funny...but it adds so much BS to the draft and stretch out each pick.

on top of all that, it starts at fucking 8 pm...give me a break

Starting in the 2nd round they should give each team 2 minutes and in that 2 minutes the GM or a team representative has to walk to the podium and hit a buzzer. If he is a second short they have to move back a spot and the next team is OTC. They make them go back to his mancave until they are OTC again and do it all over again.

All 32 GM’s or a representative from each team has to be at the draft to be the ‘buzzer guy’.

Who wouldn’t watch that? And I’m sure plenty of those guys will either lose some weight or they will get the fittest guy in the room to practice his times all offseason to make sure he is getting there in time.
