Should have used Paps in the 9th.

Ryno should have used Paps in the 9th. That would give us a better chance to bat in the10th inning. Plus why bring up Ruf if you are not going to use him? Same old crap! Different manager but the same mistakes. The Phillies also made some base running mistakes that should not happen in the bigs. To sum it up they find ways to lose!

I'm not saying I disagree, but you can't blame Sandberg for something no manager would ever do

Using your best reliever in the most important time of the game is probably a good idea, but is Paps undeniably better than Diekman? I don't think so.

NortheastPhilliesfan is right. No matter who is to blame, they are just not playing to win and finding ways to lose.

Papelbon doesn't go more than one inning too often. So you'd use him against the 5,6,7 hitters hoping he gets them out 1-2-3 and then hope your team scores a run or two and then bring in Diekman for the save? It doesn't make sense. If Papelbon even gives up a base runner and Diekman gives up a runner then he has to face Stanton.

I just got through watching Baseball Tonight and the lead commentator was making the case that, until Lee got hurt he was going to be a prime candidate for a trade. Since he got injured, we are basically screwed because other team's scouts have told Baseball Tonight that no team will touch Lee and his salary especially now with the injury. If a team decides they want to take a risk, his salary would count such a hit to our cap, keeping Lee by the Phils would be a more efficacious decision then eat so much salary by dumping him.

I can't believe you would use "efficacious" and then immediately use "then" instead of "than".

But I understand the point-no one is going to trade for a guy making 25 million bucks if he is injured

Nope, back in my day (and Schmitty's) we were beaten mercilessly with a wooden paddle if we made a grammatical error. After a while, we made very few.

But even with the error, I still thought your post was the most interesting of the entire Theead.

Apparently Cedrique, there were teams interested in trading for Lee before he got hurt. The injury was just krappy bad luck for the Phils on two fronts: a) The potential to get a young pitching prospect and another possible player; and b) The potential to save serious scratch. Just more of the same bad luck for the Phils these days as we are back in the cellar in the NL East.

Paps has been around for a while and he has faced more pressure situations. Diekman has a hard time putting two solid outings in a row. I would rather have Diekman pitching with a lead.

Why care about Stanton so much? There is less than a one in three chance that he gets a hit. Plus if he comes to bat with a man in scoring position they can walk him. I think that having a chance to bat in the tenth inning is more important. However if the Phillies were the home team and the score was tied I would not have a problem with Diekman pitching in the top of the 9th inning. My theory only applies on the road.

Yeah, you might be right about that. I may have overvalued Stanton. But I think I would be more likely to agree with your idea if Diekman was coming in facing the 2-3-4 hitters instead of the 5-6-7 hitters in the 9th.
