A team will still overpay highly for him. Not as much (obviously) if he hadn't undergone surgery
Yeah the number got smaller but in the end does his life look that much different if the contract is 8/500 or 8/400? Not really...he will obviously not pitch a lot more years (if at all) as a fulltime starter but as a guy who you can put in left field who can give you a few innings once or twice a week plus mash as a hitter that's still very valuable.

Hmm... Interesting thought...

Would teams consider making him a OF/DH/Closer?

I don't think so, it's a whole different process. He can start and throw 3-4 innings like they do these days once a week. But smarter folks than me can figure it out.

I would love to see him in a Red Sox uniform, but I just think an Ohtani contract has a lot of albatross potential. It's just hard to see him pitching for too much longer and the Sox need starting pitching in 2024, a year in which he will not be throwing. He'd still be a great hitter but it's very likely he's going to be paid as a two way player, and the Red Sox are already limited defensively (Yoshida/Turner at DH, though the latter may hit free agency). I'd much rather take a shot on Yamamoto.

I have no idea the exact number (and neither do you) but it's not what I was getting at...I just meant if this injury costs him money (how can it not?) does it really change his life one bit if he gets $100 mil less? $450 instead of $550? With all the endorsements he'll earn the rest of his life, think MJ level in Japan.

That's my point, people keep saying oooh he lost all that money...so what?
