I just don't understand how leading a check with an elbow isn't in the same category as leaving your feet before contact.

I can't speak to Schenn's intent either, but if it's to avoid hurting the guy, leaping at him isn't the way to go. He could stop, turn, or bear hug him. Leaving the feet is dangerous, which is why it's illegal.

Can't speak to the other hit in question because I haven't seen the video.

He did not leave his feet prior to the hit. He left his feet after hit was done. Good clean check in my mind
