*thinks about Letang implications* Hmmmm...here's to hoping Karlsson continues his awesomeness until Letang's up for new contract. Because that's a building block right there.

Letang (scumbag in a seas of puss) should get between 5.5 and 6 a year I would think. He's big part of any success the Pens have had in the last few years.

He will be in Norris contention for the entirety of that contact.
He plays 25 minutes a game (at 22 years old)
He won the defensive scoring race by 25 points.
He just posted the 2nd best points total as a d-man since the lock-out.

Sens leader may be retiring, they have locked up the future
Cap just took a big jump, his contract takes up about 9.2% of it (compared to 8.6% from JT's contract).
Why even compare is to Tavares? Karlsson is still making less than Brian Campbell, JBlo, and Dan Boyle.

seems like a pretty reasonable deal on both sides.

The Cap took a jump for now. We don't know what it will be after the new CBA is negotiated.

Karlsson is a terrific young player. I'm not saying he doesn't deserve a big pay raise. I just think the amount of money & the term is a risk on the Sens part.

If it came down to a re-draft, do you think Karlsson or Tavares go first? There are a lot of above-average centers, but Karlsson's a gamebreaker.

Even Murray can identify that this kid had to be signed long term.

That's a very solid deal on both sides. Well done.

Maybe Karlsson should have waited to sign that new contract - Bringing a Norris trophy to the bargaining table has to be worth a few bucks.

Tavares goes first. If there were that many Centers how come so many teams are looking for 2nd line Centers? Very few teams have the depth at Center the Pens do. Some team is going to give guys like Gaustad & Stoll big contracts on July 1st & neither one of them is a 2nd line Center.

Keep in mind that Karlsson would be the top defencemen on almost any other team. I'm not sure that Tavares can claim that just yet. This isn't meant to downplay Tavares, just praise Karlsson.

LOL!!

Karlsson is a 4th forward. The Norris Trophy doesn't go to the best defenseman. It goes to the defenseman who has the most points. The award really has nothing to do with defense anymore. Karlsson will never be in the same sentence with Bobby Orr.

Here's a list of defenseman I would take over Karlsson.

Chara
Weber
Suter
Yandle
Kronwall
Letang
Seidenberg
Boyle
Keith
Seabrook
Doughty
Pietrangelo
Campbell
Byfuglien
Edler

As you can see that's a long list.

Sorry pal but you've lost your mind. The bolded are not even in the same ballpark as Karlsson.

Apparently voters disagree with you on a few fronts. He won the Norris.

He was 8th in Hart voting. Yes... he was ahead of Tavares.

Fourth forward? OK. Led all defensemen in the NHL in takeaways by a fairly wide margin . Faced the toughest level of competition among all Ottawa defensemen while posting a +16 on team that was barely above even on the season.

Try watching a game and reading less of HF boards.

Bobby Orr, Paul Coffey and Claude Giroux are among those on the record as saying he was the best defenseman this year.

I'll take their opinion over yours all day.

Think whatever you want. I really don't care. Weber should have won the Norris. Shit happens.

Gee a +16 from a defenseman who had 71 points. That's not counting all the goals he was on the ice for that his team scored in which he didn't get a point. Obviously the other team scored a great deal when he was on the ice.

My problem with Karlsson is I don't see him as a complete defenseman. I'm not saying he has to deliver big hits. However, checking is part of the game.

I'm not a member of HF boards. I've only checked it out a bit during the past week for draft stuff.

Here's a question regarding Karlsson for you.

How many forwards in the league think Oh shit Karlsson is coming? I'm positive quite a few aren't too thrilled when they look up to see Chara or Weber bearing down on them.

Like you had mentioned, it's about being a complete defenseman. Karlsson was certainly close enough on the defensive end and blew everyone else away when he has the puck. That's much more rounded, in my opinion. Obviously, to each their own.

He's not going to hurt anybody physically, and yet he outscored each of those dudes by more than 25 points.
Maybe there's more to intimidation than wasting a 102mph into someone's shinguards.

on the defensive end, I don't think Lidstrom ever crushed anyone either. (I'm not comparing Karlsson to Lidstrom... just their styles are positional rather than take someone's head off as they cross the blueline).

Karlsson's "can't play defense" rap comes from his first year in the league, before he adjusted. Now that he has, he's top-notch positionally, and his stickwork is excellent. I would say he's no worse than above average defensively.

And no defenseman in the league is better than him offensively. No defenseman in the league is even in the same category as him offensively.

Based on his performance so far, this contract is excellent value for the Senators.

I'll bet a lot of players do, just for a different reason. Not only is he adept at stealing the puck, he can go end-to-end and pot a goal. I would argue there's no defenseman in the league who gives attacking forwards the smallest margin for error because of the aggregate of his puck stealing, puck moving, and goal scoring skills.

And here is a question for you... how may coaches think Oh shit, Karlsson is on the ice and we don't have our checking line out there. I'd say 29 of them do.

Old stereotypes die hard. He was a trainwreck in his own end in year one. Surprisingly he was actually OK defensively against the defending Cup champ Pens.

Year two he was improved but still erratic in his own end. The team and it's defensive schemes were a mess from day one in 2010-2011.

This past year he faced the best lines from the other team more than any other Senator defenseman and he outscored them 5-on-5 by 16 goals. Again he led NHL defensemen in takeaways (a slightly flawed, but improving, stat) by 16. The difference between 2nd and 9th? Five.

I would have had no problem with Weber winning. I was on the fence but would probably have voted for him. It was a toss up between those two and the voting reflected that.

But to say stuff like " he's a fourth forward" or " LOL. OMG. He doesn't play defense!!" is ridiculous and really has no basis in the statistics or his on ice play.

Here's a question regarding Karlsson for you.

To kind of build off of what was mentioned earlier, do you think any teams specifically gameplan around shutting down Tavares or would they treat him like any other top line forward?
