I thought if he gave up a few UFA years that the number would be higher per year.

I'm very happy with this. Only takes Karlsson to age 29 but those will be some good years.

That's a fantastic deal for the Senators. Very good signing. He's a franchise player.

The kid has kinda gone the Crosby route. Take the yearly number that matches your number (6.5 for Karlsson's 65 and 8.7 for Sid's 87) and don't r*pe your team so badly that they are hindered when trying to sign players. Hopefully he can avoid some of the bad parts of the Sid route and just be dominant at his position like Crosby.

I think the kid gets it and wants to follow in the footsteps of some of his role models, Lidstrom and Alfredsson, in being a truly dedicated professional. I'm psyched to watch him in a Sens uni for the next 7 years.

Wow good deal for Ottawa. Now that he's signed you can feel free to trade him to the Sharks any day now.

So worth the money. Congrats Sens on locking this kid in long term.

This seems like a risky.... ahhhhh, can't do it. Can't play devil's advocate here.

Fantastic signing - great price, good value now, and could be great value down the road.

Kudos, Sens.

It's actually a lot more acceptable for a defenseman to punch people in the sack than it is a center.

LOL - I don't see Karlsson doing any speedbagging in the near future.

Carkner plays the role of Crosby in that situation and Boyle's face plays the role of Valabik's beanbag.

So when do they trade him to the Flyers straight up for Chris Pronger?

Karlsson is a good player. He's great offensively. Defense needs work. The contract is RIDICULOUS. To put it in perspective Tavares has a cap hit of 5.5M for the next 6 years.

It's a great deal for Karlsson. For the Sens & their fans hopefully Karlsson continues his strong play from last season for many years to come.

It's not that ridiculous. They were separated by three points this year.

He will be in Norris contention for the entirety of that contact.
He plays 25 minutes a game (at 22 years old)
He won the defensive scoring race by 25 points.
He just posted the 2nd best points total as a d-man since the lock-out.

Sens leader may be retiring, they have locked up the future
Cap just took a big jump, his contract takes up about 9.2% of it (compared to 8.6% from JT's contract).
Why even compare is to Tavares? Karlsson is still making less than Brian Campbell, JBlo, and Dan Boyle.

seems like a pretty reasonable deal on both sides.

The stats are interesting for sure but the guy makes some unfounded assumptions as well.

1) That the contract was based solely on last season: Karlsson had 45 points in 75 games on the lowest scoring (maybe 2nd lowest) team in the NHL in 2010-2011. He also scored 26 points in 60 games as a 19 year-old 155 lb rookie defensemen. He then scored 6 points in 6 postseason games that year. All in all he has scored 149 points in 216 NHL games, good for .68 points per game over three seasons. It's a pretty good sample size and prorates to 55 points per 82 games. I think that is very reasonable for $6.5M considering that Doughty has 13 more points in 100 more games and is signed for $7M.

2) That the contract has been given with the assumption that it is based on the Sens in turn assuming that Karlsson's progression (primarily offensive since this is what the article is based on) will be linear. That is absurd... in fact it is beyond absurd. If he were to continue his trajectory he would score between 105 and 130 points next year. I'm pretty sure his agent didn't even try that one on for size. Obviously with that kind of production he would be one of the league's best bargains at $6.5.

The article makes good points. I agree that the longer the contract the more risk the team takes on. Anything more than a 3 year contract is risky, IMO. In the case of Karlsson I think the reward for that risk is just so high that it makes it worth it to lock him up.
