The team cannot predict the future, but at the same time, they do have to make plans for the future. Those plans have to include an evaluation of talent in the system and what amounts to a prediction about which positions should be okay and which ones need help through trades or free agency. You just don't have the resources to shore up every position via trades or free agents to make sure you are covered everywhere.

This is why I think they went with Rocker even though no one had him going at #3. Not that our pitching depth was in dire straights, but it needed more focus than the hitting side.

I think with him and Porter that the pendulum has swing back the other way somewhat.

I think the upside of Rocker with the thought they could get get Porter above slot was a calculated maneuver. The stars were aligned right. Some say Rocker was projected to be taken about 15 but maybe another team would have snarfed him earlier

He is obviously a top 5 pick if he is healthy so if his health is indeed good it is a masterful pick

So I am inclined to think that they went after the best picks available

We want to bring up our guys to play not just trade them for established guys who we regret not keeping.
Let’s keep this pitching bunch for now
I am with you on that for the most part.

And Dane Acker is with the youngsters in Arizona making his first appearance since TJ surgery early last year.

I can see a scenario where Miller comes back and Smith is sent down. Not advocating that but this is still a rebuilding year and he needs his ABs preferably at MLB level.
To me there is an obvious learning curve going on. I think he wants a legit HR and it has hurt him. When he works the pitchers and sprays it he is better. Do the home run when you get one inside you like

I would like to see him batting further down in the order. Leading off might be in his future, but for now I would like to see him hitting much lower.

I just hate it that Woody considers Culbertson as an alternative starter as opposed to a bench guy
It might be ok for Smith to do some more AAA but at some point there becomes nothing else to prove l. Best case is to fit it out at the MLB level. Hope he is learning stuff

like i have said earlier we don't need Culberson or Miller or, hell, even Calhoun now. we do need Duran, Smith, Hernandez and a couple of others who at the MiLB level

The Mets just acquired a 1B/DH, Vogelbach, from the Pirates for a rookie relief pitcher who has pitched really well this year.

Vogelbach has an OPS about 20 points higher than Lowe, but is only under control through 2024 while Lowe is under control through 2026.
