he's 31 and having an All-Star season so far. the Rangers would have to offer at least 3 years to start the conversation, and that might not be enough to do it.
Hey I get your point but if he is regressing given that his game is based upon skill and command and not raw stuff teams might see this as an outlier season. Plus we have what some will likely think as the best SP prospects in the game

But Yes if he continue la on to have a great season anything under 3 years would be an insult

I’m afraid someone like the Dodgers or the Yankees might throw a lot of money him. Then we will see how bad he wants to stay here.
Money is always the tale tale sign

I don't think Perez would feel comfortable pitching in NY. The comfort level he has here with the Rangers has much to do with him wanting to stay.

I would do 2/$27 with a 3rd year $14 mil team option that vests if he starts 25 games in 2024 and doesn’t finish the year on the IL. With a $3 million buyout.
Essentially a guaranteed 2 year $30 mil with a possible 3rd year at $14 mil.

I would add incentives as well. $4 million if he finishes in the top 10 in CY young votes in the AL.

Yeah just don’t think th Rangers want a 4 year contract on the wrong side of 40 but sure his agent prefers something in this ballpark

I would expect Martin is aiming for a contract close to what Gray got.
I would only give that length of contract to an ace. Now, if they deem Perez an ace then maybe they should offer him that length of a contract. That was the biggest problem I had with the Gray contract, the length.

t would seem like every starting pitching decision should be made with our pitching prospects in mind. It shouldn't be very hard to imagine us being able to fill spots two through five of a rotation from our system over the next two years.

We very well may have an ace in our system already. That is why I would rather trade for an ace in a similar fashion to how we traded for Cliff Lee.

After the draft, I see no need to make a major trade for a pitcher. As far as free agent pitchers go, we might only need one year deals, if any deal is needed.

A 3 year deal to a 32 year old isn’t terrible

Find a 32 year old closer and sign him. Maybe a set up man too.

No but with all we have that should be up in 1-2 years a 3 year contract although doable and fair is likely not the Rangers greatest need. I expect 4 to be ready after next year but maybe only 2 by next season. In 2 years there might be a crowd at SP which is a good thing

The prospects will be ready when they are ready. The Rangers would be foolish to assume that 2 of them will be in the rotation by next year and 4 of them by the 2024.

Haha. We have to project don’t we?
So out of Winn,Ragans and White 2 are in starting rotation next year and 2 of the front runners fast trackers Leiter and Rocker the following year.

With maybe a surprise replacement in case of injury. Maybe Hearn has it figured out by next year. Howard too.

Just call me foolish

I am not sure that 4 will be ready, but having pitchers on the team that you don't mind trading or walking away from when they are ready is a good plan. That may require eating a contract or two at some point.

You would think Winn, Leiter and White would be ready then. Between now and then you have guys like Dunning, Otto, and Ragans to start until they are ready. You have Gray in place for awhile.

Rocker may or may not be ready by that time.

You very well may get another Otto or Dunning via trade to plug into the rotation for a year or two as a placeholder.

One name that shouldn't be forgotten for next year is Kyle Cody.

They would be foolish to assume they will be ready. They would also be foolish to block them in some way in case they are ready by then.

Maybe not. But it seems money is almost always the deciding factor on where free agents go.

I doubt the Rangers would put together such a potentially dynamic pitching future just to block it.

I would hope not. There are a lot of fans who think they should though.
