I've seen memes since the tax bill was passed crediting the bill with a couple companies giving employees bonuses or raises, mostly posted by people who claim to be experts on economics. But it doesn't make a lot of sense. The companies don't have that money yet--at the earliest they'll get it in 2019--and businesses do not spend money they don't have. If they're giving bonuses, it's because they made more money this year and are engaging in a standard and widespread practice of rewarding their employees with bonuses when that happens. The companies increasing entry level salaries have likely assessed that the value of spending more money on their lowest level employees is a good investment--retaining employees against poaching and cutting new employee training costs and improving overall efficiency.

Even when businesses do have extra money under the new tax bill, though, what is their incentive to expand without a market to expand into, or to give employees better compensation without assessing that it will be ultimately profitable to do so? There isn't an incentive, and so they won't do it. That's not how businesses do, well, business. But of course they have an incentive to claim decisions which benefit employees are the result of the tax plan, because the tax plan gives them more money, and it's most likely to stand if people in general like it.

I just saw the Tweet part and my immediate thought on reading this was 'shouldn't Trump have told us how he was 'low level' and not important?' But he did. Because of course he fucking did. From Trump's statement:
