I guess the upside is that at least health coverage for blind people will be more accessible, since it now directly benefits Donny Boy.

even though Trump won the Daily Darwin award today, many are still not convinced he is an idiot

someone needs to try this on him to 100% confirm it

If you're still in Ohio in 2024 you should get close to 100%. It will be the opposite trajectory of this one so Great Lakes should be the epicenter.

Already looking forward to it.

Extreme TL;DR warning!! (need to vent)

Some guy I went to high school with posted this in the wake of the Charlottesville weekend and Trump's comments. I don't believe him to be a terrible person, but it does illustrate the main problem with a lot of America right now - ignorance. I needed to think it through and process it. Understand how and why he reached this place. Here is what he wrote:

This all was not an issue until Obama lit a fuse. We all bleed red people. People being ignorant is not Trumps fault. If black lives matter why is their a record breaking black on black crime rate just in Baltimore? All lives matter. Except for ticks and mosquitoes. I'm racist against parasites. I wish we could all go back to 1987.

Nazis are obviously subhuman creatures, but they are a tiny portion of the population and I don't spend much time worrying about them. Their ideas are absurd and most rationale people treat them as such.

I worry more about the tens of millions of Americans who support Trump despite his constant statements that reflect a lack of belief in basic American institutions (free press, voting, the judiciary, etc.) and a lack of competence in even basic organizational practices (I'd be fired for Tweeting comments representing my job on my personal account or attacking co-workers with personal insults, huge staff turnover, etc.). I keep hearing the media saying the support in his base is changing. It's not going to. The majority of Republicans support Trump's handling of Charlottesville - ya know, the time when he said neo-Nazis and people marching with neo-Nazis included some "very fine people" as they marched with torches and chanted about Jews. Even if you don't give two flips about statues one way or the other, it should be obvious those statements are absurd on their face and dangerously encouraging. If you can't admit mistakes or flaws in the guy you voted for after that, you're never going to. And the three portions I highlighted above represent why perfectly.

(1) "This all was not an issue until Obama lit a fuse." Obama passed no legislation that divided people. Here were his comments after the Trayvon Martin verdict was read: "The prosecution and the defense made their arguments. The juries were properly instructed that in a case such as this reasonable doubt was relevant, and they rendered a verdict. And once the jury has spoken, that's how our system works... And those of us in authority should be doing everything we can to encourage the better angels of our nature, as opposed to using these episodes to heighten divisions." Brav-fucking-o. That is so tempered and graceful. So in contrast to Trump's statements after an election, towards the press, towards court decisions, etc. He is attempting to break down our belief in core institutions. I thought the Trayvon verdict was wrong and I'm sure Obama did as well, but i'm guessing he set aside those personal beliefs to embrace his role as our leader because that is what the job demands at times. This is a role Trump has never embraced and does not even seem to understand (based on his Twitter account still being open alone). The narrative of Obama causing division is a false narrative perpetuated by people who get a media diet from a party mouthpiece and who are unable to be critical readers/viewers/listeners. Whether your diet is liberal, conservative, or moderate, we should all work to vary it. We should all be critical and skeptical of what we read and view and think about it from another perspective. That said, there are some things that are facts... and actions... and proposals. The idea that Obama "lit a fuse" is supported by none of these. And this false narrative ignores that nationalism and nativism have been rising worldwide due to economic uncertainty, huge populations being displaced in the Middle East, and fears over terrorism. The only element that can be attributed to Obama independent of those causes is the fact that he IS black, which is offensive to some and something some view as threatening. Both of which are based purely on racism and ignorance. If you think Obama lit the fuse, I'm sorry, but you are wrong. No facts support that. No statements support that. You are not a critical reader/viewer and are accepting the rhetoric being fed to you. And it's no coincidence that I notice some of Trump's strongest supporters have some of the lowest reading and writing skills among my friends. Their inability to interpret and understand nuanced arguments and complicated topics hampers their ability to reach factually accurate conclusions.

(2) "If black lives matter why is their a record breaking black on black crime..." This statement shows so many false facts, biases, and fundamental misunderstandings in such few words. First off, there isn't "record breaking" crime. Statistics show that crime has fallen steadily for roughly three decades...dramatically, and despite a recession which would generally cause a strong uptick. There may be a few places that are exceptions, but the long-term trends do not support this statement (and again as noted earlier, beliefs do not overcome facts). Second, the actions and horrors which two citizens inflict on each other is not something the government or any of us can ultimately control in a systematic way. The violence in our society is regrettable and sad. But the focus of BLM is about how the GOVERNMENT treats it's citizens and even a cursory knowledge of crime stats, prejudices, etc. informs someone that the treatment today, while much better than it was decades ago, still has FAR to go and is clearly prejudiced against racial minorities. BLM supports that this treatment should be EQUITABLE. That shouldn't be a controversial opinion. All Lives Matter, Blue Lives Matter, or people against BLM misunderstand this to mean "special treatment" because (1) they choose to not believe that minorities are treated differently despite overwhelming quantitative and qualitative evidence the contrary, (2) they lack empathy or basic morale values, and/or (3) they seek out the continuance of their own privilege at the EXPENSE of the pursuit of justice and the equal treatment of all people under the law. Bringing up black-on-black murder is a scarecrow argument that has nothing to do with the original question. If you feel the government should treat it's citizens equally, you should be a supporter of BLM. Period. If you are a supporter of the police, you should be a support of BLM because they seek to root out the bad police that hurt our faith in the institution of law enforcement. Period. If you truly believe all lives matter, then you have to start by acknowledging black lives matter because those are the lives at risk. Period.

(3) "I wish we could all go back to 1987." 1987 wasn't better for most people and nostalgia has a funny way of glossing over the negative parts of our own experience. Our brains are literally hard wired to do this, so we have to be careful with glorifying the past. The fact is much of America was unaware of or unwilling to acknowledge racial disparities in 1987, viewing it falsely as a problem we had solved. Crime was much worse then. A terrible war on drugs was beginning that would harm minority communities. Women weren't paid as much nor treated as nearly as equally. And on and on. These are all still problems today, but most of them have gotten better. But because we didn't have the news coverage we do now and because cell phones weren't out there capturing the violent and scary realities of the most at-risk segments of our society, many were blissfully unaware of these problems. By and large over the past 200 years, equitable treatment has been moving closer and closer to the true ideals this country was founded upon. This should be celebrated. And progress should continue in that direction. But sadly some fear change, whether it is threatening or not. But life is not an achieved endpoint and justice does not reach a finish line. Lamenting the past is a dangerous endeavor when done without looking beyond the limited context of our own experiences, acknowledging our own biases, and considering the experiences of others as genuine.

That is only done when we adapt and evolve as people and as a society.

As such, I can only conclude that this type of thinking must be left behind. Adapt or die. Make your choice. Your ignorance is not acceptable, your unwillingness to progress to a new job or a better way of thinking is an anchor on our society and a drain on the economy. Your lack of belief in our institutions - the free press, freedom of religion, the voting process, etc. - amounts to treason and displays a fundamental lack of understanding as to the foundations and reasons for the success of our society. Adapt or die.

The choice is yours. I'm just here to tell you those are the only two fucking options.

Well, after reading that eloco rant above, it's clear to me why you weren't long for the politics forum here at the Hoop.

About halfway through, I had the same thought.

(I'm pretty sure the only reason I haven't also been banned, despite being kind of similar to eloco--except that I have hair ;)--is that I'm a team board mod and was cut more slack for working with certain parties in setting that up.)

Funny story....Way back in the 80's when the one partial eclipse occurred they allowed us to go out to recess but told us to not look in the sky. Naturally did any of us listen...nope...None of us went blind but looking at the sun in general is stupid f'ing thing to do.

Basically Trump is no different than a grade school kid. He is told not to do something. He doesn't listen and does it anyway. That's how we solve all the problems, tell him things like "You can NOT give more funding to NASA and environmental research or you can NOT help the minorities and the LGBT community...." Voila he won't listen and then all become fully funded with the proper laws and research.

That's one reason, along with several others. As Dacks posted a couple of weeks ago, that place is a shit show.

/Although I see the new owner is fed up with some posters over there.
