100% agree. Your first part is maybe where I get annoyed, like class clown. But I’ve heard interviews where I totally like and admire the dude.
Yeah he actually seems like a really stand up guy. I actually feel bad for disliking him for so long.

I am really close to the same point. But if he can just hit MLB average for a starting outfielder ( .240-.260ish ) with his speed on the bases and the ground he could cover in a small left field, he could help our defense greatly and that extra pop at the plate could be huge for us closing the gap some with the hated 'Stros. Hell if he stinks it up in Peoria, he better not be on the opening day roster. Then we can simply move on from him.

Indeed we got lucky with our SP health. No arm or shoulder issues. i think we had someone get dotted with a comebacker ( Marco ? )
Pitching is not my concern with the club. My worry is LF and middle infielders batting avg being bottom tier of MLB average for those 2 spots.
Also we need an athletic 1st baseman that is alot taller than France and alot thinner. No shifts = 1b have far more ground to cover. And unless you dip the baseballs in Hersheys syrup then add sprinkles ... I doubt France is getting after them with alot of earnest.
I keep trying to find ways to be optimistic about Kelenic but even when I try to convince myself there is hope, it just ends up with him being a replacement level player at best. The elimination of the shift should help his batting average on balls in play. His career BABIP is .201, per ZIPS projections if that raises to say .264, that would still have him with a .223 batting average. In the end, he can hit the ball hard but he just strikes out too much. I will say that if Kelenic figures it out, it would be huge for us.

I'm not too concerned about the defense. Kolten Wong throughout his career has been a premium defender but had a down year in 2022. And despite Ty France's athletic limitations, I'm not too concerned there due to the fact that first has never really been a position where you have to have a great athlete at. My bigger concern is if anyone in the infield misses time, I don't really think we have viable replacements available.

If he can find a way to hit like he did in Tacoma I don’t think the shift really matters. He had gap to gap power. I just hope he shows up leaner and quit trying for HR in the gaps, lean up and try for doubles in the gaps.

I’m not “worried” about Wong but I am just concerned because the way he has been talked about is if he some huge upgrade from Adam Frazier and my concern is he will be the exact same in terms of he’s a name. With France, the entire lineup would be better if they can get him or Teoscar to be the full DH. If you don’t have 4 above average outfielders then it seems weird to use the DH for one of them. I get wanting Cal to DH on his days off in the field but it just seems like strategy is the lineup is either going to have a hole in it or the defense will have a hole in it.

Diego Castillo lost his arbitration case against the Mariners and will earn $2.95 million this season.

Castillo was arbitration-eligible for the second time this winter and filed for $3.225 million. The hard-throwing 29-year-old right-hander recorded seven saves last year to go along with a solid 3.64 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 53/22 K/BB ratio across 54 1/3 innings (59 appearances).

Mariners signed RHP Kyle Tyler to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Tyler was released last August by the Giants. He shuttled around last year between the Angels, Red Sox and Padres before finally landing in San Francisco. The 26-year-old right-hander has made seven relief appearances in the majors since 2021. He'll augment the Mariners' organizational relief depth entering the 2023 campaign.

Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said on Wednesday that Matt Brash will compete this spring for a spot in the Mariners' season-opening bullpen.

Brash parlayed an excellent spring training last year into a spot in Seattle's Opening Day rotation, which made him an extremely popular fantasy sleeper, but he was eventually shifted to a relief role after five calamitous starts. He's expected to pitch this spring for Team Canada in the World Baseball Classic, which certainly plays a role in the Mariners' thought process here.

Sam Haggerty (groin) is expected to be healthy for the start of spring training.

Haggerty missed the postseason after sustaining a late-season left groin strain. The versatile 28-year-old utility specialist batted .256/.335/.403 with five home runs and 13 stolen bases across 201 plate appearances last season. He should be ready to roll once Mariners' camp opens up in a few weeks.

Andrés Muñoz (foot) has started a throwing program.

Muñoz underwent offseason foot surgery and is expected to healthy entering spring training. The expectation is that the Mariners will closely monitor his workload in Cactus League action as he ramps up for the 2023 season.

Cal Raleigh said on Wednesday that he underwent offseason surgery on his left thumb.

Raleigh played the final month of the season with both a fracture and a torn ligament in his left thumb. He's fully recovered from the procedure and even caught a bullpen session from Marco Gonzales earlier this week.

Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said on Wednesday that Dylan Moore (abdomen) had a minor setback in his recovery from offseason sports hernia surgery, but is still expected to be ready for Opening Day.

Dipoto also had positive updates on the recoveries of Paul Sewald (elbow), Andres Muñoz (foot) and Sam Haggerty (groin), all of whom are expected to be ready to go this spring. Moore made a nice impact in fantasy leagues when he got to play last year, but he'll probably be limited to starting against lefties initially this year.

Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said that Jarred Kelenic and Taylor Trammell will battle this spring for a job as the left fielder against right-handers.

AJ Pollock is likely to start in left against lefties and also see some time at DH. The Mariners will be rooting for Kelenic to win the job with a strong spring. Of course, he hit just .141/.221/.313 in 181 plate appearances last season, but he did show signs of progress down the stretch. Both Kelenic and Trammell have an option year remaining, so the loser of the competition will likely be sent down.

Luis Castillo will not pitch for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic.

Castillo had a shoulder issue at the beginning of last year, which is likely part of why the Mariners discouraged him from taking part. Castillo would have been a big part of the team's staff, but the Dominican Republic is still expected to have Sandy Alcantara and Framber Valdez available.
