Well, yeah. There's a method to his madness:

1. Avery needs people to hate him
2. Avery needs to not be beaten to death

Getting into a fight with a heavyweight, win or lose, is a bad idea. If he wins, only heavyweights will take a run at him, as opposed to everybody. If he loses, no one will take a run at him, because no one will take him seriously.

It's a stupid game he plays, but when mind games like these work, it kills a team (for textbook examples, see the 1995 Boston Bruins or the 2008 New Jersey Devils). I will say this: He's no wuss. The man played with a ruptured spleen. He's just a clever little douchebag on top of it.
