It is getting late in the year to get his players into camp, especially the pitchers. They have to learn how their catchers set up.
With the moves the Cubs have made, it looks like they have moved on from Bellinger. He came back nicely with them and loved playing there, but apparently Boras wasn't satisfied with the offer they made to him.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports the Cubs and free agent slugger Cody Bellinger have agreed to a three-year, $80 million contract.

Passan adds that the agreement also contains opt-outs after each of the first two years of the deal. Bellinger returns to the Windy City just a few weeks after negotiations appeared at a standstill and his ultimate landing spot seemed up in the air. The 28-year-old former NL MVP resurrected his career last season in Chicago, posting a sublime .881 OPS with 26 round-trippers and 20 steals across 556 plate appearances. His return certainly complicates the playing time projections for young sluggers like Christopher Morel and Michael Busch, but he adds some much-needed pop to the Cubs’ lineup for years to come. His underlying batted ball metrics, most notably a lackluster 87.9 mph average exit velocity last year, portend some looming regression in the batting average and over-the-fence pop departments, but he’s clearly returned to relevance as a five-category fantasy contributor until further notice.

I think the damage of these deals has been seen and teams aren't falling for it anymore, especially when it involves coughing up draft picks. 10 years ago Blake Snell gets a monster deal no question.

For someone with 2 CYAs, Snell has a fair amount of red flags. Injury prone, inconsistency, high walk rate.

I like Chapman and the deal for the Giants, but he isn't without his question marks either.

Another one screwed, Snell signing for only 2/62

You love to see it, Boras finally falling back to Earth

yep

and ultimately it's good for the other guys in the middle.

I still say Baseball is the sport least built for longevity. The mega deals make absolutely no sense and you have an mlbpa that doesn't see the sport like the other 3 major sports do

Agree 100%, locking up a guy for 10 years that might be crippled at the middle to the end of the contract has never made any sense…..the success rate of the the long term contracts has to be ridiculously bad……

not true but locking for 10 or more yrs is dumb in any sport

In an article by the RAM Financial Group, a large financial services group that caters to professional athletes, their website states the average span of professional athletes are:
  • NFL: 3.5 years
  • NBA: 4.8 years
  • MLB: 5.6 years
  • NHL: 5.5 years

what's not true

The mega deals squeeze out money for mid tier players and clubs end up re stocking with their players with club control. Baseballs Financials is easily worse than the NBA and NFL.

The NBA is loaded with mid level guys making 20 million plus. Baseball teams (save a few) don't have that luxury.

baseball can spend as much as they want just look at the dodgers :suds:

baseball is also a much less physical sport except maybe the pitcher/catcher:suds:

its why they play longer
