It's important to note that hockey happens on every square inch of the ice, and checks are part of hockey. It wasn't so late that it could be considered out of line, and to time something like that up is nearly impossible going at that speed. I find it very highly unlikely that Chara intended for this to happen. In fact, it wouldn't have even been a penalty if the turnbuckle wasn't there.

The league needs to look into this. Simple tricks of engineering, like changing the shape of the shift from bench to glass to make it more gradual or simply adding more substantial padding, would at least help combat such incidents. Since it's happened before and just happened again, I would consider it lazy on the league's behalf to use Chara as the scape goat and suspend him rather than trying to make the rinks safer for the players.

I agree. The space between the benches should be rounded. There will always be angles that COULD result in an injury, as seen in the video below, but a rounded area would reduce the risk.

All Bruin disciplinary reviews. It is still a conflict of interest in my opinion.

If Evander Kane (just a random player) injures Gregory one night then is involved in a play in a later game which is Colin reviews are we supposed to believe he can completely forgot about what Kane did to his son?

I actually forgot that one I remembered the ryan smyth incident.I actually chose the don cherry clip because he was talking about the need for more padding along that area. The thing that kind of sucks is the Smyth injury was how many years ago and it still hasen't been addressed. This has happened before it may have been avoided if more precautions were taken.

- Jacques Martin is usually guarded in his public pronouncements but he left little doubt about how he felt about Zdeno Chara’s hit which landed Max Pacioretty in hospital.

“It’s serious when you see an injury like that,” Martin said. “The league has to deal with those issues. It’s not the first time. It seems to be getting worse and worse. The league has to take some responsibility. It was a dangerous hit.”

- But Canadiens goaltender Carey Price said he felt the hit, which came with 16 seconds left in the second period, was unnecessary.

“Max had dumped the puck and he took at least three strides before Chara hit him,” said Price.

- Eller also felt that Chara was at fault on the play.

“You make quick decisions out there and unfortunately Chara made a bad one,” said Eller. “I think he knew that the glass was starting there. Hopefully, he won’t do that again.”

League must take action, Martin says

Max's mom was at the game. She was in total shock.

League also needs to take responsibility on the designs of those dangerous areas around the player benches.

Suicide is never justified.

I don't agree with suicide.....but.... you never know how much someone is suffering in their life.....I think I could understand how they could think that suicide would be the only way out....when you are in a place that dark it may seem that you'll never see the light again....nobody knows what's going on in another persons mind....

I was thinking something similar to what Darkstone said earlier when I first saw this and re-saw that Smyth hit. Angle the partition a bit or something. It won't eliminate risk, but it would definitely reduce it. Something like:
_________
B E N C H \___

ice

..well, not quite what I had envisioned in my head but the best I can do with the available characters, or at least the best I care to try to attain at the moment.

Also, I don't think the hit was intentional or dirty, really. As someone(s) pointed out, it happened too quickly to time something like that, and everything looks so much worse in slow motion.

it would be very unfortunate if Chara got suspended for a hit that happens all over the ice, 30 times a game. It was a terrible spot on the ice for the hit and it was an awful result but not a dirty hit.

Easy fix. Glass all the way. Players on the bench sit behind it.

If that was anywhere else on the ice, no injury and no calls for anyone's head. In fact, rubbing a guy out along the boards happens 10x a game. It's just WHERE it happened that's the issue here. I've been around this game long enough to have seen the same thing many times.

Yeah, soul of the game blah blah blah. We have to take drastic measures to stop something that happens every few years!

No dirty intentions. No conspiracy. Just an unfortunate result. But it happened in Montreal and it involved Boston. The whine-storm is going to be epic.

Glad the kid's okay.

A 6'9" monster finished his check.

You want to know why I think there are more injuries and concussions over recent years? The players are bigger, stronger, and faster than ever.
