Will watch this game tonight, for Malone's 32 / Stockton's 28 assists.

Will also try to do my buttermilk biscuits taste test tonight. Will make 2 batches of biscuits, one with all purpose wheat flour; and the other with a gluten free flour mix.

I'll be starting the game in a few minutes.

However, I'm so stupid! When I started making the biscuits, I realized I only had 1 cup of flour left of the regular all purpose flour. So I can't make equal batches, as the recipe calls for 2 cups of flour, and that's what I had done with the gluten free flour.

So the two batches will be unequal size. The gluten free batch will make 2x the amount of biscuits as the regular one. So it's not a fair comparison.

Arg, why didn't I realize I had so little flour left yesterday.

Also, while watching the game, I'll be trying Blue Moon's White IPA.

Everytime they mention "Blue" doing something, I always think of BlueMoon_76. Then I have to remind myself, it's Blue Edwards.

Malone had 6 boards in the first 4 mins.

Stockton is good at changing speeds.

I was pleasantly surprised that Rod Strickland was the Spurs PG. I've always liked him, so now I get to see 2 favorite PGs.

When I was a kid, I used to do an Exel Worksheet on the top 30 scorers. I remember Rod Strickland getting onto the top 30 and moving him up a little bit. I think I also remember Nick Van Exel, but that must've been for assists and/or steals.

Van Exel's nickname was "Nick The Quik", but I don't know if he was really that great at steals.

I think it was more of his speed on his drives and floaters.

I like the body control Strickland has, especially with those long arms.

Stockton had some beautiful steals. In one of them, he started moving backward toward the basket, after his man passed the ball. Then just before the ball was passed back, he intercepted it in flight by jumping back toward his man.

If this were a current game, I'd upload a clip.

I'm not done with the game, stopped it at halftime.

I'll finish it tonight, and then watch Game 6 of the 1988 Finals to see if the Musburger quote is there. I've been trying to find what game it's from for 10 years. 3 weeks ago, I watched game 6 of the 1980 Finals. Wasn't there.

Musburger did play-by-play from 1975 - 1980 Finals, then was a studio host and trophy presenter from 1982 - 1989. It's unlikely the quote came between 1982 - 1989, because that would have meant it came from a studio segment or pre-game interview or trophy presentation. But oh well. At least that game contained "an almost unthinkable storyline", with Isiah Thomas scoring 25 points in the 4th quarter on a sprained ankle.

I would have thought Johnson playing center for the Lakers in game 6 of the 1980 Finals would have been the most likely, but it didn't come from there, to my disappointment 3 weeks ago.

I found a couple of forums asking this question, here's one that I'm not sure if you saw. "An almost unthinkable storyline has unfolded in this NBA Finals." : nba

Yes, saw that. I decided that the video they're referring to, @ 6:51, was sampled. I asked in the YouTube comments, twice, to the author, whether it was sampled, and if so, from where. Never got a response.

BTW, I'm not sure if tagging the author's name in the YouTube comments sends an email to him/her specifically, but I tried anyways.

Musburger did ESPN Radio from 1994 - 2004 for the NBA Finals. The video reddit is referring to is game 5 of the 2004 Finals. It just seems very unlikely that ABC would include a RADIO play-by-play call in their NBA Finals montage that they show before every Finals game, since 2006.

Just like it also seems likely that his quote would come from when he was a studio reporter / sideline reporter / trophy presenter, from 1982 - 1989.

It most likely came from a game that he did play by play, from 1975 - 1980.

In this Mark Heisler article, he says it came from the 80s (he was probably guessing).

++++++++++++++++

Surprise Ending Won't Be Forgotten - latimes

In Brent Musburger's trembling phrase from the 1980s, not many "unthinkable story lines" have unfolded in the Finals lately.
+++++++++++++++++++++

I asked Clintonite33 to tweet to Mark Heisler if Heisler could find out what game the quote came from. But that question won't be posted to Heisler's page unless Heisler actually responds. (He just tweeted him this past weekend).

One thing I was upset about was that when Karl Malone made a few perimeter jumpers early, the play by play said "That's the way he should do it, make perimeter shots first".

NO!!!!!

I want Malone to score in the paint first.

One thing I haven't seen yet is his back to the basket game. I'll be disappointed if I don't see a satisfying portion of it in the second half.

I'll also repeat this. I really like how Stockton changes speeds. He goes from quick to slow easily. I think that's important, because it also keeps the defense off balance, and creates a lot of space and angles for which to pass to ball.

What in the world? Robinson steals an inbounds pass.

He hesitates, then drives past Eaton for the layup.

Cmon Eaton. You can't let a center HESITATE, then drive by you.

That play was even worse! On replay, they showed that Robinson drove in between Jeff Malone AND Eaton.

I'm pretty sure Stockton has more assists to Jeff than to Karl. As of early in the 3rd.

Jeff's versatility in the 3rd is starting to show.

He's good at scoring off the dribble.

Blue Edwards fast break jam!

If he has 2 more good plays this quarter, I'm grabbing a Blue Moon!
