Do signing bonuses count against the cap? I'm pretty sure they do but I'm not sure how much. Seems the only way we can keep the core together for a long run is to use signing bonuses, longer years and less yearly money for the likes of Thomas, Sherman, Wilson, Okung etc. to keep a competitive team.

They do count against the cap, but a team can prorate it over 5 years.

ok, so if ET gets an $18 million signing bonus that will count as approx 3.5 million each year (for the next 5 years) plus his yearly salary?

Yes. Unless of course you have some money to spend on it now. For instance, if ET gets an 18 million dollar bonus and they can afford to put 6 of it on the cap for this year then the prorated hits would be appox 2.5 million over 5 years.

Yeah salaries and bonuses are not as straight forward as some might think. Salaries can be front loaded or back loaded and signing bonuses can be also unevenly divided over time up to 5 years.
