...third line.

Whoo!

Guess he can play alongside Mike Grier, too. Just one old, journeyman short of a full line.

I'm sorry, but this is just an initial reaction. Nieds is probably going to bring some much needed size, grit and leadership to a team that severely lacks all three.

I just want a bigger move sooner than later.

Running out of cap space with each mediocre signing Gtown. I don't think we have more than 2-3 million left after this signing if it happens.

Wait, how do you figure? Heard it's one-year, $1 million?

We have like $10 million in cap space.

This also signifies the definite end to Adam Mair's career as a Sabre.

Bottom two lines may look like this..

Grier-Gaustad-Nieds?

Kaleta-Kennedy- ? ?

The Buffalo News' Sabres beat reporter Mike Harrington just tweeted:

"Assume Rob Nied signing has to mean a trade is coming to get rid of a forward. Stafford most likely, given what DR said about Cs."

I don't mind the signing since we have no experience as far as cup's are concerned.

At least they did something and for the price I have no complaints here.

Edit: Plus I don't think Grier-Gaustad-Nieds is a bad combo at all.

Me neither, Boss.

Also, I'm eager to see who they bringing in to help the scoring department. I think Nieds is an upgrade from Ellis and Mair, too. No doubt about that.

you guys just got a defenseman.

meaning the pens? i know they just signed another vet, but i'm pretty sure he's AHL/Depth. all the signings since day 1 have been depth/not against cap signings.

Grier-Gaustad-Nieds?

Kaleta-Kennedy- ? ?

Lets start with you "left winger" cap hit, then your "centers" and then your "Right wingers" followed by your d-men, and goalies.
Vanek - 7.143
Hecht - 3.525
Kennedy - 1-1.25 he's in arbitration, with the minimum 10% raise he gets .935
Grier - 1.4
Roy - 4.0
Connolly - 4.50
Gaustad - 2.30
Niedermayer - 1.15
Pominville - 5.3
Stafford - 1.9
Kaleta - .6-.85 not sure if he's in arbitration, but he's looking for a raise
Ennis - .875
Rivet - 3.5
Leopold - 3.0
Montador - 1.55
Myers - 1.30
Sekera - 1.0
Butler - .85
Miller - 6.25
Lalime - 1.0 rumored to have been resigned.

Total Cap Hit thus far without any scratched players and without any bonuses - 52.643

Realize also that with this plan you have a horrible d-core that has gotten much worse from the year before as well as the fact that you really haven't improved offensively either. you currently have just about 7 million to the cap ceiling, but the sabres won't spend to the cap ceiling, they will spend about 56 million, giving us 3.35 million left to play with.

That being said, there is no big signing to be had for 3.35 million.

You saying that would be the 4th line or would the resulting Kennedy-Ennis-Kaleta line be your 4th line?

8.7 million in cap space.

I don't think they'll spend to the cap, either. But there is definitely room for a nice player at around $3 million

Since when did the Cap raise to 61.5 million? Your forgetting, capgeek probably doesn't have niedermayer or Lalime, or the unsigned RFA kennedy, kaleta, or the rookie Ennis who is sure to make the team. These numbers add up. Also, they will not spend to the cap, golisano has been vocal about that in the past, I don't know why he would this season. The sabres only have 3-3.5 million in "budgeted cap space" left.

Salary cap: $59.4

Lalime and Niedermayer are already calculated. Ennis is on the list. Kennedy and Kaleta are not yet figured in.

I'm figuring Kennedy and Kaleta will each get around a million a piece. It still really leaves room to sign someone for either two or three million and still have three million in cap space. The Sabres spent right near the cap last season. They had only $1.6 million left in room...

Newspapers have been sourcing capgeek lately so I'm just going to assume this is the most reliable site out there. nhlnumbers.com is good, too.

I'm happy with this signing because it means Lou can't bring him back. There's a reason Devils fans called him "Glidermayer" last season. He's lazy and soft. What a terrible player. I've never seen a more gutless player put on a devils jersey.

Look, I'm not trying to stir anything up here. I know that you guys love your team, and that anything can happen in sports. And hey, now that Hasek isn't ruining Philly teams left and right, I'd even say I have a soft spot for you. But I don't like your chances this year. Like Catscrap said, no offensive change + negative defensive change = uh oh.

Miller will steal games here and there and here again, but unlike last year where it was usually petty theft, it'll have to be grand larceny pretty darn often this time around.

Agreed.
