Robbie stands at 1983 hits. He has a longshot chance to reach 2000 career hits in front of the hometown fans. Tonight begins a 10-game homestand against the Rangers, Rockies and Angels.
17 hits in 10 games is a formidable challenge, for the best of hitters. And as fate would have it, 5 of the 10 starting pitchers he'll face on this homestand are left-handers. He hits .254 against lefties versus .291 against right handers.
More than likely he'll get his 2000th in Texas during the 3-game series of the 18th-20th.
And it would be somewhat ironicc if he got his 2000th hit during the September 22-24th series in KC. There are still some KC fans who harbor anger toward him for the 2013 All Star game homerun derby. As you might recall, Robbie was chosen as team captain for the homerun derby for the AL squad and he had orginally picked hometown favorite BBilly Butler to be on his team but later reneged and added someone else instead.
Robbie should finish the season with about 2015 hits. He'll start next season as a 33-year-old and will need 985 hits to reach 3000. It's doable. He'll need continued good health and will probably have to move to first base and then DH at some point. But it is definitely doable.
(age 33) 2016 - 185 hits (2200 hits)
(age 34) 2017 - 170 hits (2375 hits)
(age 35) 2018 - 155 hits (2530 hits)
(age 36) 2019 - 140 hits (2670 hits)
(age 37) 2020 - 130 hits (2800 hits)
(age 38) 2021 - 115 hits (2915 hits)
(age 39) 2022 - 90 hits (3005 hits)
