The gap between second baseman Robinson Cano and the New York Yankees on a new contract is enormous, with sources telling ESPN's Buster Olney that the soon-to-be free agent is seeking approximately $305 million over 10 years.

People familiar with Cano's thinking have a sense that he will take the biggest offer he receives this winter, regardless of whether it comes from the Yankees or another team.

The $305 million represents the total value of Alex Rodriguez's record-setting deal if he achieves all of the built-in incentives.

He is insane if he thinks that he is worth this much.

I mean he's a very good player. Maybe the best at 2B but he's not a once in a generation talent

I dont think he expects that much... it is just his starting point... you would be dumb not to use a starting contract that is too high... I see him more to get 7 years for 200 million...

This is an unreasonable number, and I don't know to believe it if was actually what his agency is asking for or if it's a leak by the yankees to make him look greedy in case they don't re-sign him...but nobody is going to offer ten years anymore after A-rod and Pujols.

He might get around 250 million over five to seven years.

Let me get my calculator..

$250m / 5 = $50m per year

$250m / 6 = $41.7m per year

$250m / 7 = $35.7m per year

So, no. He will not get 'around' that. He will get no where near that.

Change the 250 to 150, and you'd be close, but even that is a bit much, IMO....

I dont think it is the 30 million a year that is a reach... I can see him getting very close to that... its the 10 years that is crazy...

Nice to see someone else around here with at least some knowledge of negotiating strategy.

I'm hoping Cano becomes an EX-Yankee this year. He'd probably have to move to shortstop if he came to my Red Sox, Dustin Pedroia is that good, but I want him playing AGAINST NYC in the future, not for it.

Well, if Buster Olney reported it, it MUST be true.

It's neither. It's a fabrication. When are people going to learn to just ignore outlandish stories that begin with "ESPN's Buster Olney reports..."

He can "seek" whatever stupid, ungodly contract he wants. He's not getting that.

Why is it so hard for people to understand negotiating strategy?

First offers are NEVER realistic when players with any business at all
being in the majors are concerned. And that's not just in baseball!

Thanks for the link.

Don't know when I'll get around to doing more than glancing at it, but it does look interesting.
