Plus missed 2 years between a ROY season and an MVP season (in the Army) where he surely would have produced that much more.Reading his baseball reference page is one of those things that still blows my mind.
Dude was somehow criminally under-rated in the context of modern day analytic WAR. (23 seasons of career average of 8.2!!)
He might have won even more MVPs had that stuff been more considered.
He was Ted Williams/Babe Ruth at the plate no doubt,
But he mixed it with otherworldly slick fielding and speed that made him maybe the greatest defensive player (leader putouts alltime CF).
RIP
And missed 2 years in the army unlike RuthMays played in the wind tunnel known as Candlestick while Ruth played in Yankee Stadium, more aptly named "The House Built for Ruth"
How do I know that Henderson didn't juice? I don't or certain. But he never had the Sosa-esque power jump that most Roiders did. Pujols isa candidate. So is Mike SchmidtHow do you know that?
Interesting pick...putting aside roids is Henderson's career actually > Bonds'? Maybe so
Or maybe Pujols?
Schmidt I like. Not as good a career as Bonds but I think he's underrated. No one talks about him as a top 10 all time player but he sort of wasHow do I know that Henderson didn't juice? Yeah, he only hit above .300 once. Yeah, he struck out a lot. But he won three MVP's, six Silver Sluggers, 10 Gold Gloves and made 12 AS teams.Schmidt I like. Not as good a career as Bonds but I think he's underrated. No one talks about him as a top 10 all time player but he sort of was
For comparison Bonds won 3 of his 7 MVPs well before he juiced. Bonds is the greatest living ballplayer nowYeah, he only hit above .300 once. Yeah, he struck out a lot. But he won three MVP's, six Silver Sluggers, 10 Gold Gloves and made 12 AS teams.
He's terrific but we're trying to figure out greatest living ballplayer and there are plenty who had better careers still aliveHere's a thought. Maybe Ichiro. 3000+ hits, 10 gold gloves, three batting titles. Maybe the best defensive RF in history, him or Clemente. No power but he didn't need to slug with Junior, Buhner, A-Rod hitting behind him. All from age 27 on. Add four years to his totals and he would be very close to Pete Rose's hit total

Mays was better
Could be. Trout was on that trajectory but he can't stay healthy anymore. Shohei might be someday, but you have to wonder how long he will play. He's terrific but we're trying to figure out greatest living ballplayer and there are plenty who had better careers still alive
He was also a pretty darn good guitar player too.I loved me some Bob Gibson. He was a tough, mean pitcher who could hit.
Clemente is up there in the goat category imo. Here's a thought. Maybe Ichiro. 3000+ hits, 10 gold gloves, three batting titles. Maybe the best defensive RF in history, him or Clemente. Imagine if any great player didImagine if Ruth had 2,500 more at bats…..
Shohei is on track to be that but he's not yet where we can say he had a better career than Henderson or Schmidt or Bonds or Pujols, etcCould be. Trout was on that trajectory but he can't stay healthy anymore. Shohei might be someday, but you have to wonder how long he will play.
he,s in the goat category.i don,t think Willie can be topped. What about Ted Williams-even if you don't consider that he missed almost 5 seasons to military service I would still consider him the greatest living player--I mean, not now but once they thaw him out.
