Jackets are nowhere near cap floor and they have too many NHL ready D men already.

I was mainly talking about the chance to shake things up. Getting goals from a d-man could help a team tremendously, especially if Nash gets moved.

This obviously all hypothetical now since he's signed, but the Jackets could have picked up Greene, packaged Nash with another d-man and received a couple of top-six forwards in return.

Howson wants two top 6 forwards plus a top prospect & a 1st round pick for Nash right now. Howson isn't going to package Nash with anybody.

And it was very calming...I'm just fed up with these Toronto-area sports writers continually taking shots at Calgary (Simmons did it again this week with the Calgary Stampede) and Proteau is just a lemming following the herd regarding Wideman.

time to go off topic ... what was his take?

Im no tree hugger or peta pusher but ... chuckwagon racing ... wtf?

50 horses dead at the stampede in the last 26 years?

would we allow a sport like this to continue unchanged if humans were dieing in these numbers?

they gotta make it safer ... do they change it altogether and have them race in heats of 2 wagons starting at opposite sides of the track?

or are they worried people will stop attending the races because theyre taking the whole "i wanna see a horse die today" element out of it :noidea:

Unfortunately it doesn't matter what we think a player is worth. All that matters is what the agent can get the team to agree too.

That's actually a good point. We keep talking about value as it was before the cap jumped up. Now that it's up, it looks like the price for a solid top-6 forward or top-4 d-man is at about $5m if UFA or $4m if UFA.

I catch myself doing this all the time. To me, if a forward doesn't average a point per game the previous year then they aren't worth $6m+. Do it three years in a row, $7m+. My thinking is apperently way off base now. :L

If the cap is $39 million and you're paying Green that type of coin, I agree with Jeff that it is nuts. However, with a $70 million cap, all player salaries appreciate in value and Green is getting pretty much what you would expect for a offensive minded defenseman only a couple of years removed from a Norris trophy nomination. The hope for GMGM and Caps fans is that he can rebound from his injuries and post the type of numbers he has in the past.

If he rebounds and gets back to leading all d-men in scoring, he's being underpayed. He's a monster on the PP. Those numbers were better than most legit top-6 forwards.

Short of eliminating the chucks altogether, I don't know what you can do when a horse suffers a heart article and collapses causing a pile-up (funny how that didn't get into Simmons rant). Horses pull up lame during regular horse racing and are put of their misery, yet there is no hue-and-cry about eliminating horse racing.

I think the only thing you can do is reduce the number of chucks racing at the same time (from 4 to 3), which would provide more room for both the wagons and the outriders.

Considering what Wideman got (only using him because he was on the Caps last year; sorry Dash) this deal is not bad at all. Green > Wideman + $1 mil.

Didn't the Caps get off to a great start last season until Green went down with an injury? Both he and Wideman seemed to excel under BB as well. The biggest question about Green is can he stay healthy, but I don't think the dollar figures are that far off the mark (and will likely be rollbacked if/when the new CBA is signed).

I was mainly talking about the chance to shake things up. Getting goals from anywhere will be absolutely necessary, especially if Nash gets moved.

Fixed that :D

And Howson seems to believe that Nash alone is enough to get a franchise goalie and two forwards, plus a prospect.

Someone needs to tell him Bob Clarke isn't in control of anything but a popcorn cart Philly anymore.

Caps fans do seem to equate goals against with bad D-men, don't they? They used to just flat out attack Sylvain Cote. I thought he was one of the most underrated players I ever saw.

Of course, all the vitriol at Hatcher was earned.

Sylvain Cote - eloco's favorite Caps' defenseman of all-time. He would hate the new NHL interference rules b/c that guy could lay a hip check.

Yes, they were 7-0 and Green had 3 goals and 3 assists. Then he got hurt and didn't return to the lineup until basically mid-February. And he never seemed to be 100%.

I bought Mrs 43 a game worn Cote jersey as a wedding present. She loved that he always supported the goalie and kept the net clear.

True story.

5 Reasons the Mike Green Signing is Good for the Caps AND Reasonable

(1) It's about the right price for both parties. Green certainly would have gotten somewhere around this from another team.

(2) People tend to underestimate his defense. He's a MUCH better defender than he was 2-3 seasons ago.

(3) This makes Green the 11th highest cap hit among defenseman in the league. Only one player among the top 10 has a contract shorter than 6 years, so the commitment level is much less than comparable players and many of those D-men are not as good as Mike Green.

(4) Green's portion of the cap two years ago was 8.8%. It is presently 8.6% and that will likely come down with each passing year. So basically, the Caps re-signed Green for 3 more years without a raise.

(5) When healthy, there are only two defenders in the NHL you can consider point-per-game kinda guys. Mike Green is one of them.

On a related note, I'll reiterate too many posters on this site look at raw numbers rather than the salary in relation to the salary cap AND are unwilling to accept a basic fact of life for pro athletes (and basically all of us) - salaries go up over time. Dinosaurs. Dinosaurs I say.
