Kind of ruins my hopes that the Vikings would be desperate and maybe trade something like a 5th round pick for Sanchez. Now just have to hope that Dallas gets a bit desperate knowing that Romo could now miss the entire year.
Sanchez sucks. We just need to face facts. Denver made a mistake trading for the turnover machine to begin with.

Sieman to start was a SWAG . They tried for Kap or Bradford, traded for Sanchez , traded up for Lynch, all the while with Trevor on the team. There was nothing to suggest Sieman would rise to the top and start for the Super Bowl champions. A good SWAG but a SWAG nonetheless.

Oh I don't view it as a mistake. They made a trade that was very low risk/medium reward. If they cut Sanchez today it is at no cost to the team and they get their draft pick back. So pretty much like he was never here. They took a chance in the hopes that they could maybe coach some of the turnovers out of him but Sanchez is what he is. The team thankfully figured that out and have moved on.

I guess right now I just don't see any other QB option that would be helping this team more than what we have right now. Let's just go through the scenarios...

1) If we sign Osweiler--This was option A. If we were to sign Osweiler that would mean that Okung ($5.2 million), Anderson ($6 million), Stephenson ($4 million), Jared Crick ($1.75 million), and Jordan Norwood ($800,000) would not be on this team. Their salaries all equal that of what Osweiler is making this year. Actually they are just a bit under.

So that means our 2 starting tackles, starting RB, starting DE now that Walker just went down, and our starting punt/kick off return man are not on this team. Heck it would honestly be more players than that because we still have to add other players to replace those players on the 53-man roster. So we could maybe include Marshall not getting an extension.

2) Colin Kaepernick--Well he has spent almost the entire off season injured and when he has played hasn't really lit the world on fire. Throw in his salary would mean Okung and Anderson are maybe not on this team. Plus giving up what some were talking was a 2nd or 3rd round pick for his services.

3) Option 3 I guess you could say was trying to trade up in the draft even higher to a top-2 pick to get one of the top-2 guys that most figured. So pretty much trading away the next 3 drafts to get that high. Can't do that.

4) Other options on the open market. I wouldn't have minded us trying to get a guy like Chase Daniel. He has shown enough promise.

I guess am I missing something here? Which of these options do you consider a better option than what we have at QB right now with the cost of what it would take to get that player?

Agree- Sanchez was really a low risk move. We cut him and all we do is lose time. We didn't have a lot of good options at the time. I am just thankful Lynch fell to #24 at this point.

Or other options were all too costly for the return.

Easy Brock was and is the #1 option.
We would be without CJ (replaced with Booker and the reason for the low tender to begin with knowing more than likely Brock would be re-signed and they would lose CJ) and Sanchez that is $10 MM right there. Enough for Okung and Donald.
Colquitt would have been cut sooner.
Oline needed the upgrade.
Sieman would be #2
and our first round pick would be ????. Maybe a DLineman like Robert Nkemdiche and then our 2nd round pick would be who knows. Many quality players to chose from.

So I have Brock, Okung, Donaldson, Nkemdiche and Booker.

and Crick at $1.75MM is easy to fit into the cap.

I`ll just say this..I certainly didn`t call anyone out. If the words ..some.many,a lot, certain people, etc seemed to point at anyone in particular, then I stand guilty and apologise. Go Denver ;)

I think it's time we just all agree without going into detail and say

Go Trevor Siemian and Go Broncos!

Not just yet

Through out this preseason, Kubiak has been quoted a number of times saying that how they view a player, and their role on this team going forward, is based on what they've seen in camp and workouts in addition to preseason games .. This was said not exclusively about the QBs, but every position ..

With that in mind, this staff saw Siemian all last year yet still moved up in the draft to get Lynch ..

Even though it seems like a million years ago, between Manning taking his own sweet time with the retirement and the Osweiler departure, there was bound to be a little hump in the road at the position ..

Sanchez was a disappointment, and Lynch is a very green kid with a huge upside

That leaves Simian ..... I'm not saying he didn't earn it, however, it's not as if he lit the world on fire ..

I'm not sure your numbers are adding up correctly...The players I listed only added up to a hair shy of $18 million. If you include Sanchez in that equation which he is no longer a part of that it maxes out at $22.5 million compared to the over $27 million you are advocating for spending. So we still have a $5 million difference here.

The other part of this equation that you are forgetting is that Osweiler is not just a cost to the team this year but for the next possibly 4-years at a very high price. Compare that to now having Lynch at a very cost controlled number as well as Siemian. So our QB position should be one of the cheapest in the NFL allowing for us to be aggressive in the future with keeping certain players. Such as now that Sanchez is gone good chance we can now lock up Sanders long-term or bring in a guy like Josh Sitton to play RG for us who has All-Pro ability. So we go from our OL being one of the worst in the NFL last year to possibly a top-10 unit this year.

To me Osweiler maybe gives us a better chance this year to win. I'm not so sure though that he gives us the best chance with his cost to win for the next 4-years. But even this year just have to see. If he completely tanks down in Houston then to me that is a huge victory for the Broncos of not only avoiding signing an average at best QB but also getting a 3rd round pick out of the deal.

Right now to me with so many QB's thought to be on the Broncos radar there are many rabbit holes we could go down and say "if this happened our team would have done this..." Elway took a huge risk letting Osweiler walk or maybe it was more Kubiak took a huge risk by benching Osweiler for Manning and upsetting Osweiler in the process but I guess in the end all we know right now is that decision for sure got us a Super Bowl win. Worth it even if it cost us Osweiler if he turns out to be a good QB.

.

Several alternate scenarios to choose from.

This is a 10000 foot view . Who knows which new draftees make the roster each year. Chances are very good several new draftees each year will replace a lot of vet salary. I think all draft picks this year made the current 53.

Yes Manny and CJ are cap casualties of signing Brock .

IMO, Talib is also gone in 2017 (not unrealistic to assume) no matter who is playing QB.

Talib is the linchpin to everything going forward in 2017.

2017-19 Okung is playing $12 MM a year

I doubt DT in 2019 is on the books for nearly $17 MM but left him there nonetheless.

------------------------------------------------------

Based on Brock's current 4 year $72 MM Houston contract

2016 cap hit is $12MM -

off the books CJ at $6MM + Sanchez at $3.5 MM + $3.25 MM for Colquitt = $12MM

Est $6MM left in cap space as of today.

2017 Brock's cap hit is $19MM

off the books Talib at $12M + Ware at $8MM + CJ at $3MM = $23MM - $2MM dead cap from Talib

Est $38MM under the cap to sign Roby to a contract extension.

2018 Brock's cap hit is $21 MM

off the books Talib again for $12MM + CJ for $4MM + TJ Ward for $5MM = $21 MM.
Est $43MM under the cap to pay extension to Ray maybe Booker depending

2019 Brock's cap hit is $20 MM.

off the books Talib at $8MM + CJ at $4.5 MM +Stephenson at $5 MM = 17.5 MM

Shortfall of 2.5 MM in Brock's final year. Who knows how much the cap goes up by then but plenty to pay Brock in his final year. Est $48MM under the cap.

-------

I'm happy that Lynch is our QBOTF but his acquisition had a very large element of luck that the draft would fall the way it did and a team was willing to trade with Denver.

This is all I will do on this subject as we can play this salary cap game all day.

Ian Rapport reporting that the Rams and Broncos had trade discussions about Case Keenum recently. A QB Kubian had in Houston.

From what I understand what they saw in Siemian during OTA's caused them to decide to back out because they liked what they saw.

Doesn't sound like " recently " then and even then it would make no sense for either team at this point. Has to be back in ota period.

Rotto report is that they had talks after the first preseason game. Obviously with Goff struggling the Rams weren't willing to trade Keenum and Denver was going to "keep tabs" per this report. Sounds like it was around the Sanchez started to fade and Siemian started to win the job and we started to look for a vet on the roster knowing Sanchez was done. Not a big deal, just reached out with Keenum knowing the system.
