Just read an article where the two sides are still pretty far apart on demands & offers. Looks like we will be starting the season with Rent-A-Refs

The genius of Harbaugh’s comments about the officials | ProFootballTalk

Now that Harbaugh has backed off, some league insiders believe that Harbaugh knew exactly what he was doing.

And what they think he was doing was sucking up to the locked-out officials, who eventually will return.

If they [the striking officials] like and/or respect Jim then his words would/could produce a positive result when they return. On the other hand, if they are annoyed by him then his words will have little influence on those "close calls".

When/if any refs reflect on Harbaughs comments about replacement refs, I imagine unionized refs view Harbaugh as speaking for NFL coaches, instead merely speaking for Harbaugh & the Niners. Coaches & owners have tried to manipulate refs for decades with varying success, so most refs probably are pretty good at compartmentalizing the positive things people say about them Vs taking a few compliments to heart.

In the end, I think Harbaugh's comments entrench the presumed position of the regular refs during their labor agreement. I highly doubt that a game day ref's judgment will be swayed by some supportive comments Harbaugh made during the preseason (if/when they come back).

When I read this, I couldn't believe Florio wrote it. Just goes to show how conspiracy theories get started... one nutjob with the ability to reach thousands makes some loose connecting with an absurd personal belief, and then presents it as fact.

Is it really so hard to believe that Harbaugh was simply exasperated over the horrible officiating? I mean we know the real officials make mistakes, but these replacements can't seem to get anything right.

Everyone adds layers to what Harbaugh says and then gets mad with him not being straight. I understand that with stuff like him saying Alex is elite and all, but with bad calls from inexperienced refs? Not everything is double-talk or code for something. Harbaugh's smart and all, but he wouldn't have been able to concoct this and do it if the refs didn't make bad calls.

NFL fighting them purely on principle, rather than any economic basis. Its peanuts for them to meet the refs' demands, but they don't want to set any precedents of being beaten in labor showdowns. Terrible stuff.

Are the replacement officials really that bad?

I find it funny that every year you hear about blown calls that cost teams games from the regular officials, but now that we have replacement officials everyone talks like the old ones were damn near perfect. It doesn't matter who officiates the games there will be plenty of calls that fans are mad about the next day.

What sucks for the replacements is the first one they make will be all over the headlines after the game. The media will spin it that if the Regular officials where out there the call would have been made correctly. And I will say "What? those same officials that can't even a call right after replay sometimes?"

The replacement officials might have actually got the Bradshaw fumble called correctly and sent us to the Super Bowl >_>;

I understand what you are saying, but there's a difference with 2-3 calls being controversial and several more being wrong or unpredictable. The worst thing about the replacement refs is that they can't possibly be expected to be consistent because they need to correct whatever they do that is wrong - which will help some and hurt some. Predictability in the officiating helps, because without it, you'll have more teams getting away with things and then all of sudden called on it, you'll have some calls that are always called but then later never called. As a coach, I'd want my refs to be fair, reliable, consistent, and knowledgeable. True, the regular refs miss on those too, but it's like me saying I could be a doctor because even doctors are wrong sometimes. You'd go with the doctor that makes the fewest mistakes, not go with me because no doctor is perfect.

I understand the media will focus on the end game gaffs, but if you have gaffs all game long, it affects it even more. I don't care what the media reports, if the refs unreportedly screw games up, I'd be upset. And there will be more screw ups with these guys than the regulars.

Just because one is not perfect doesn't make the selection of refs arbitrary.

I think there are plenty of competent refs out there. But the biggest issue to me is that NFL refs are guys that have worked in pressure situations for years....working your way up through the ranks in increasingly bigger games, then of course the pro games themselves, weeds out the guys who don't have ice in their veins. These new guys are just being thrown in to the fire, and they're gonna find out that some of them can't take the heat, which is millions of people watching and ripping them if they screw up.

So that's why maybe the NFL can get away with it for a week or so, but more than that and some of these replacement guys will just melt under the scrutiny. The league probably knows what its doing, regardless, and probably already knows when it will bring them back.

There will be controversy, people were getting upset at Super Ref Hoculi over the years. There will be missed calls and it will make fans and players upset! :attention: Go 49ers!!

have u watched preseason? sometimes they're not sure what's going on. it's like (n*2)^ where n is normal mistakes by regular officials.

Speaking of bad calls looks like the officials just cost Vandy the game against South Carolina. 4th and 7 and Vandy had what should have been deep completion for the first down putting them in range to take shots at the endzone, but the officials missed a blatant pass interference. SC DB was beat on the play but got away with swatting away the WR's arm so he couldnt make a 2 handed catch well before the ball arrived. Right in front of the officials too.

This is what concerns me with Week 1. This type of blown call by the replacement officials will be all over the media the next day, but it won't even be story for the NCAA tomorrow just like it wouldn't be a story next week if the regular officials had blown it.
