Are the replacement officials really that bad?

I find it funny that every year you hear about blown calls that cost teams games from the regular officials, but now that we have replacement officials everyone talks like the old ones were damn near perfect. It doesn't matter who officiates the games there will be plenty of calls that fans are mad about the next day.

What sucks for the replacements is the first one they make will be all over the headlines after the game. The media will spin it that if the Regular officials where out there the call would have been made correctly. And I will say "What? those same officials that can't even a call right after replay sometimes?"

The replacement officials might have actually got the Bradshaw fumble called correctly and sent us to the Super Bowl >_>;

I agree completely. They'd be too scared to screw up the Bradshaw fumble. Not to mention, I'd doubt they'd go making shit up like they did with the gamewinning Cruz fumble in AZ. Sorry but I refuse to believe the replacements are worse than that guy.

all refs make mistakes, but these replacement guys are less experienced and will more more mistakes. those mistakes will get amplified and i bet there will be a game changing call one game that gets a deal done with the real refs.

that depends on the game changing call...

I still believe that instant replay only came back because of how an "nfl favorite" finally got hurt by bad calls.

the NFL and ESPN didn't give a fuck that bad calls helped the Packers win in 1996 and 1997, but when a "blown" call in 1998 eliminated them.... everything changed and Instant Replay returned in 1999.

Same goes for the replacements, nothing will change unless the replacements fuck up and "cost" the packers a game. I hope that happens on Sunday, just because that means the 49ers win.

Nah, let it happen some other week. I don't want any excuses.

Speaking of bad calls looks like the officials just cost Vandy the game against South Carolina. 4th and 7 and Vandy had what should have been deep completion for the first down putting them in range to take shots at the endzone, but the officials missed a blatant pass interference. SC DB was beat on the play but got away with swatting away the WR's arm so he couldnt make a 2 handed catch well before the ball arrived. Right in front of the officials too.

This is what concerns me with Week 1. This type of blown call by the replacement officials will be all over the media the next day, but it won't even be story for the NCAA tomorrow just like it wouldn't be a story next week if the regular officials had blown it.

Since a lot of writers and media folks are in unions they tend to slant towards being pro union. Not knocking unions or anything but that's why you see a lot of negative reactions in the media when it comes to the replacement refs and while good deal of it is warranted they still go overboard imo.

Too many people want to find a good guy and bad guy in all of this or who's right and who's wrong but in this case and much like the lockout a year before there really isn't one too be had.

I tend to side more with the NFL in this case but I can also understand the beefs the officials have with some of the things the NFL is asking.

those stinky cheeseheads will have an excuse no matter what

Some people would rather lose correctly than win on a botched call. Not me. I first want to win legitimately, then win on a botched call, then lose on a botched call, then get blown out. Losing on a botched call would frustrate the hell out of me, especially to the Packers, but it would mean we were competitive with them and have hope to win the hard ones later. A blow-out loss can be overcome, but don't want to go through that.

I haven't decided whether losing on a stupid decision made by a QB or other would be worse than a blow-out. Trust and reliability in our players often is harder to overcome, than just a bad night. Now, if everyone's making dumb decisions, then that's, of course, worse.

I don't mean to toot my own horn... ahhhh who am i kidding, of course i do...

With the way ESPN is freaking out over this call at the end of the Seattle/Packer game. And the rest of the major media will undoubtedly jump in and put enormous pressure on the NFL because their "favorite" got screwed by a bad call.

I feel pretty good that a deal will get done within a week and the regular refs will be back soon. Just not by next week's games since they have to pass physicals, get issued the new nike unis, etc., but the deal will get done soon and they'll be back 2 weeks from now.

Just like Instant Replay, it never happened when the shitty calls went the way of the media favorite for 2 years in a row, helping GB win a Super Bowl and reach another... but as soon as a blown call eliminated GB... ESPN lost its fucking mind, and along with the rest of the media they pressured the NFL into bringing back replay.

Same thing is going to happen here, ESPN's beloved packers getting screwed is going to be the straw that broke the camel's back, there have been plenty of bad calls. Just like with Instant Replay. But the last straw for ESPN and the media will be GB getting screwed, just like in 1998.

ESPN's treatment of blown calls sure takes on a different tune when it doesn't go GB's way huh? Their guys are acting like this was the biggest travesty in modern sports, while not giving a second glance to when the blown calls put GB in a position to beat the 49ers in week 1.

This is what the refs were waiting for and why it's smart on their part to not back down from their position.

After this weekend the NFL is going to be far more open to compromise and as long as the refs are willing to give a little from their position the deal should get done quickly.

Actually I was wrong and so were you Grayghost.

According to the rules the refs upstairs (reviewing the TD) their sole job is to determine if the ball hit the floor, both foot are in bounce, making sure that everything is legal in the endzone. They CANNOT or have the power to determine "Possession" - that is left for the refs below on the grounds. So the replacement refs are at fault because the regular replay refs are not able to override an official below on issues regarding "Possession".

if I remember right simutaneous possession always goes to the offence and the receiver had both hands on the ball and his feet touched the ground first

I'm just glad I wasn't the one who made the call, this will be a hot topic all day

Well that's where you'll find a descrepancy. Many believe Tate only had one hand in there(barely) as Jennings showed to have possesion of the ball as they were coming down.

I believe once they were near the ground, maybe Tate put two hands in there but IMO Jennings held the ball more so in his possession than Tates at the initial impact to the ground.

This all is proving that you don't have to be smart to become a billionaire. How dumb are these guys?

They are harming their multi-billion dollar enterprise to save a few bucks on the real refs, who are proving their value every week. Stupid, greedy, and selfish.
