Only thing I hate is the scrums after a SOG and scrums after a clean hit. But that is the NHL today.
Hi guys
First the disclaimer: I'm not condoning taunting here. Never thought too highly of showing off in sports under any circumstance.
Having said that, though. The guy apologized once he realized he really hurt the kid and that should be enough for the league, the fans and everybody involved. As far as celebrations go, this thing is really tame in comparison to the antics of guys like Tie Domi or the Broad Street Bullies in the 70's. That doesn't make it alright but it doesn't need to get blown way out of proportion either. I hope this kid will be okay but Asham doesn't need to be punished further.
I don't know if there's any truth to it but one thing I heard that bugged me was the Caps players saying stuff like"it wasn't fair, Beagle isn't a fighter". Was that just more stupid ESPN rhetoric? The hi-lite I saw the kid dropped the gloves and threw some punches. That makes him a willing combatant and fair game, in my book. I remember how pissed I was at the stupidity of the Sharks (and media) in the play-offs last year when Marlowe decided to drop them with Bieksa. They didn't have a beef then and the Caps for sure don't have one here.
I sort of agree with 46 here. You can't support fighting AND be pissed about the outcome of this fight (not that people here are saying that, but a LOT of the media is). Some of the tweets last night from TSN/ESPN guys were so on the fence it was disturbing. "Headshots are suspendable, but that isn't?! Blah blah blah" Did you expect him to go for body shots?! If you don't like fighting, great, I'm not a supporter of it in the sport either (though I admittedly enjoy it, I see it as the risks are far greater than the benefits), but PICK a side, don't pull this crap when a guy gets TKO'd. The Asham thing was a WWE reference (ironically), and my position is that he didn't realize the gravity of his injuries. He got to the box, sat down, saw him being tended too, and gave him a stick tap.
Good post.
Just a btw, Beagle is fine. He has a fat lip but has no concussion symptoms.
Now THAT shocks me. He was unconscious, and by definition, is concussed. *sigh* Oh major league sports and your disregard for safety in so many cases. I hope they at least let him rest a few days, just to monitor him.
Also, I haven't seen anything about it since the initial reports. That really upsets me. This is a big deal, but the media doesn't see the need to promote it. I mean, what's more scandalous than Einstein's Theory of Special Relativity potentially being wrong?!?!
That's because they haven't verified it yet. Can you imagine how that conversation would go?
"Hey, Tom, just got back from two weeks of horrifying illness. Good to be back! So, what are we up to today? Looks busy."
"Oh, hey Bob. Yeah, me and the boys are setting up an experiment. We want to see if we can verify this other data and disprove a theory."
"Oh really? Which one?"
"Physics."
The other reason they haven't been buzzing is because, in all likelihood, there WAS experimental error. Those particles did NOT exceed the speed of light. Einstein WASN'T wrong. I expect them to announce a few "could not duplicate findings"-type experiments in the next few years, and my heart will die a little bit with each one, because that means I will never be able to go back in time to the third period/OT intermission of game 6 Hawks@Flyers, walk up to Michael Leighton, slap him HARD across the face, and simply say, "You'll know why."
Seriously, dude. Didn't need to be a fucking neutrino to get past Leighton that night, did you?
I just want to say one thing about this, though... In my humble opinion, you cannot support fighting and also get bent about Arron's little celebration, afterwards. If fighting needs to be taken out of the sport, fine. I have no problem with it being eliminated.
But, if a guy wants to feel the adrenaline afterwards, and he tries to charge up the crowd after 'winning' a fight, it's no different than a goal-scorer doing some antics after putting one in the back of the cage. They're entertaining the crowd, and Asham said as much. He also said he regretted it, but in the heat of the moment, when the blood pressure is up, every poster on this forum has said or done something they've later regretted. This is no different. We don't need to gather a lynch mob and tie Asham to a tree for it.
Let's not forget what is being put on the line when two men go toe to toe in front of thousands of watchful eyes. It is their pride that is on the line. If you were to lay someone out the way Asham did last night, don't you think you also would be pretty fired up?!?

How can you NOT be a fan of a little pooch like this?
Sorry, but can't let that statement go by without commenting.
The only antics the Flyers pulled off after a fight was to skate to the penalty box.As for gestures-if you got the best of Schultz,Kelly,Dupont,Saleski, etc, which was rare, they would point to you to say that we're gonna go at it again.
Calling bullcrap on that one.
I happen to know there's a guy on the Flyer roster right now who has been know to 'shush' the crowd after a fight. If that's not uncalled for, I don't know what is.
