gettin closer to relocating time (end of june) and the search as intensified..

found an apartment in northern oakland, temescal (corner of telegraph and 49th) posted online and the roommates seem pretty legit

however, i'd like an outside opinion on the neighborhood since oakland has such a dreadful stereotype.. from what i've read online it looks like an up and coming neighborhood that has gotten a lot safer over the past few years.. can anybody on here attest to that?

everything i've read says stay the eff out of west and ESPECIALLY east oakland, but i've read some good things about northern oakland like piedmont, rockridge, and a little bit about emeryville.. which are all the surrounding communities

once again, any help would be greatly appreciated

oh and what do you guys think about the BART system? i know vee touched on it earlier.. is it a safe system, useful?

the apt i'm looking at is near a BART station (mcarthur i think it was, and then my office will be near the dublin station).. would the BART be a viable option for a daily commute, or should i stick to my car?

Definitely stay the fuck out of West and East Oakland. I wouldn't even consider Emeryville for the most part either. I think Naes lives in Temescal. I'll shoo him over to this thread so he can give you some thoughts. If I were to move to Oakland, which I have considered doing very recently, I would live in the Lake Merritt neighborhood.

And as far as BART goes, it's a perfectly normal, safe transit system (unless your name is Oscar Grant). I use BART a few times a week to get around the city and occassionally to go to the East Bay. Never had any problems, ever.

You'd actually be looking at a reverse commute as it's more common for people to be coming from Dublin for work to in Oakland or SF. I think that's just going to have to be a choice you make on your own. Not sure which way would end up cheaper or quicker for you.
