Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't every poll of actual Native Americans found that anywhere from 80%-90% do not find the team's name offensive?

I'm all for changing the name if it's actually offensive. But it seems to me that the vast majority of Native Americans do not find it offensive.

Native Americans use the name Redskins in some of their schools on reservations. So I guess they are being racist against themselves.
(Wonder if Congress will make them change their names?)

Not saying you're wrong, but do you have a link to these Native schools that call themselves Redskins?

Wellpinit (Wash.) High School -- where the student body is 91.2 percent Native American

Kingston (Okla.) High School (57.7 percent Native American) (been this name for 105 years)

"The word 'Oklahoma' itself is Choctaw for 'red people.' (guess we should change the name of that state while we are at it)

Red Mesa (Ariz.) High School Redskins The student body is only 99.3 percent Native American.

The Phoenix Indian High School's newspaper is The Redskin

So all that means is they don't all agree with it. Some are offended and others aren't.

Just like not all black people want to see the N word go away and use it themselves. Many of them believe it's ok for them to use the N word, but not those who aren't black. I think it's stupid, but they want total ownership of that word. How is this different?

I don't want white people as a group being referred to as "whites." I find that super-duper offensive and not only that, on Yahoo the word "blacks" is censored so it's not fair if us white folk don't share the same privilege.

People are always going to be offended at something.

I really don't care if they change the name or not. Change it and those people find something else to bitch about, but bitch they will.

Fair enough. We should change the name of the State Oklahoma!
(hey if even one person is offended we should listen) ;)

That's really my point. This is just the current thing to bitch about until another gay rights issue arises.

Can we force Harry Reid to change his name? I - along with lots of other people - find him to be highly offensive.

I have no problem with The Redskins being forced to change their name(if that does happen) as long as they prove to me that this is not just a small group of the Native American population that is so against it... Right now, it seems more like white America is trying too hard to be PC...

But with that said, I can easily see why people would have a problem with the name... Not to mention that is the TEAM that plays in this countries capital, where all the politicians are!!!

That's because the people against it are spinning it that way to make themselves feel better. The National Congress of American Indians has been very clear about what it's viewpoint is on the matter.

Really? Is that why the only persons we ever see ranting on this one are older white politicians and media types (and the occasional token NA leader)? I am not denying that there are Native Americans out there protesting, but we rarely see them on TV, on the web , etc.

Also - here we go again - if someone even mildly protests that name they are an evil person, a racist, etc. Give me a break. Sounds like you are pretty much in love with yourself & have no tolerance for anyone with a different viewpoint.

Go ahead - change the name if needed, but please stop portraying those who fight this as some of the worst people on the planet.

I'm just baffled by the resistance to changing a team name from an indefensibly derogatory term.

The slippery slope argument is (as it so often is when appealed to) complete and utter BS. There is no mascot in the US that comes anywhere close to being as clearly derogatory as this one.

The only argument I can sympathize somewhat with is the lifelong redskin fan who feels an emotional attachment to a word that has come to mean nothing more to them than their team (even then its heard to feel anything beyond "get over it")... and yet that is the one argument I have seen the least of.

Please just call your viewpoint for what it is. You are pissed your favorite football team's name might have to be changed. Don't hide behind something else.

90% of the people speaking loudly against this on this board are Redskin fans.

I would love to see an updated survey asked to all native americans or at least a very large sample size of each tribe...

4 Questions needed-all with 3 choices YES, NO, dont care

1. Are you a football fan
2. Are you a washington redskins fan
3. Are you offended by the term Redskin
4. Should Washington change its name

____________________________________________________________________________

and I would like to see it sorted by location and tribe...

Honestly should a native american from Wyoming have the same input as a native american in maryland??
