I just knew it was a no-no. And like the use of any racial term, 99% was under people's breath. So my understanding about their feelings to the word was more in a general sense than from reactions to people saying it.

Feel free to go reservations and walk around calling people Redskins. I wouldn't do it, I wouldn't recommend anyone else do it either. But if you do, take a camera with you. You may end up with a lot of smiles and pats on the back, or you could end up with a broken f
ace.

Really though, its an old fashioned word that many don't care about generally. But if used personally, its condescending and insulting. If you went around trying to use it as some term of endearment most natives will find you quite audacious and irritating, at the very least.

Sonny, I couldn't agree with you more on the point that anyone doing this would be not only an idiot, but a rasict and bigot as well.

That was not my point. My point was who the hell does this anyway? You noted you never heard anyone use the term 'redskin' in that manner. My guess it's because anyone stupid enough to insult an Indian in the first place is not going to be choosing that word first. Drunk, dirty, poor all come to mind from conversations I've actually had with NAs on this very subject and what they been called and felt insulted about.

I'm not saying there aren't NAs who don't like the name. I'm saying the issues of poverty, education and alcoholism are much more in the forefront for most of them, when it comes to NA stereotypes. NOT the word redskin.

Redskin - Definition and More from the Free Merriam-Webster Dictionary
American Heritage Dictionary Entry: redskin
Redskin | Define Redskin at Dictionary.com
Collins English Dictionary | Always Free Online

The term Redskins used to be a compliment, but now it is widely considered an insult toward the Native American culture.

You obviously didn't read my original post. I plainly stated that I don't think the Synder or anybody else within the Redskins organization, intended the name to offend others. My point here is that the name is considered by many as an offensive term. That's a fact. You cannot deny reality. People ARE offended by the term Redskins.

When you say the PC police, who exactly are you referring to? More over, are you implying that it's ok to say the N-word to black people, the fgg-word to homosexuals, and retard to mentally disabled Americans? Is that what you're telling me? Would you feel comfortable going into a Native American bar and calling the bartender a redskin over and over again?

I'm not even going to bother. Respectfully agree to disagree.

Yea, the government intervention is ridiculous.

Who even tries to be derogatory to native Americans? Nobody I know.

I spent some time with a group of Native Americans at Lake Tahoe. They shared with me that they were not allowed in the Casinos. While I was talking to them outside a Casino, security personnel tried to run them off. Rascism against Native Americans does exist. I have seen it in North Carolina against the native Lumbee Indians and I've seen it in other places also.....

Yes, there is a ton of discrimination and hateful and disgraceful attitudes displayed toward many NAs who live on reservations and elsewhere. I've talked to many of them thru my travels. I've got a friend who teaches on a Rez and says it's rampant and shameful how clueless so many Americans are about the conditions and poverty that many of them face.

Well I don't think the Redskins are hurting for customers, but they'll most likely get hounded to death by political correctness crowd until they change their name.
1st thing anyone that talks about something needing to be politically correct is just looking for their 15 mins. of fame. I say Fuck politically correct. If that is the only thing they are hiding behind they are just being douche bags! (for the PC I did not mean to degrade actual douche bags with that comment)

What is the most offensive and derogatory term you could call a native american, if you actually, truly wanted to put them down? The first thing that comes to my mind is 'redskin.' Would the Washington Ni***rs be allowed? Or the L. A. Ch**ks? No? Then change it. Either something new, or just shorten it to 'Reds,' (you know, like Cincinnati baseball).
I am Native American (& everyone knows it where I grew up) & lived in some not so
shall we say nice areas. Not a single time have I ever been called a Redskin as a way to degrade my race (plenty of other things)
For those that think the word Redskin is the same as the "N" word is simply ignorant to the conversation. Plain & simple. (those words are light years different)
It was Native Americans that were calling themselves Redskins. The origin was never a slight to the race.
For those that say yeah but now it has somehow magically changed to a racist word (only if your miniature mind lets it) on reservations their are Native American High Schools that teams are named Redskins! So what are you saying? the Native Americans are being racists towards themselves & schools?
I also live near the muckleshoots right now & if you are trying to be insulting doesn't matter what word you use it will bring the grief someone here spoke of.
If I said so & so is a white man (explaining that the guy I am actually talking about is white) I am sure it wouldn't be construed as racist or attacking.
If I am taking trash to a white guy & calling him a so & so white man, I am sure he would be thinking I am using a racial slur because he is white.

if a PC person told us all how to say black man African American or whatever, whatever word the PC shithead told us to use could be used as a racial slur. (or whatever word for whatever race) So simply saying someone can use a particular word as a racist (discriminating) word.
You can turn any word into a Discriminating word you fuckin' lollipop! (as an example)
I am sure there is some Native American person out there looking for their 15 mins. of fame that agree with the PC fucks, just to play a victim role, but they are all ignorant to where the word came or how it was used. I have lived 40 + years & in my youth lived where we fought all the time, & not once was I ever called a redskin to entice me with a racial slur. Like I said in a earlier post. I wish Congress would go find something else to go grandstand about. They are simply showing their ignorance.

One more point.

If a word used to describe Native Americans would be considered racist.
It would be the word Indian.
That was branded to Native Americans by White men. Redskins was given to Native Americans by Native Americans.
Back in what western days & before what were the three words used by White men in distaste of Native Americans?
Indians, Savages, & Heathens.

Now don't think I am wanting everyone to stop saying Indian, the Native Americans pretty much took the power away from that word as far as standing as a racist word. But if you want to follow history, it was one of the three words that white men used to look down on Native Americans. Redskins were a word White men had to deal with when negotiating with Native Americans. But by all means make the word Redskin the evil word Congress!!!

:suds: it's all good. I respect the history and tradition of the rivalry. It's made for a lot of great memories for me. And the Boys are my favorite team to hate on...so back at ya :D

It's just too bad that both teams, haven't been really good at the same time, in forever.

Retired Native American Chief Would Be Offended If Redskins Did Change Name « CBS DC

This is NOT a 'white man' explaining this

Why are people offended by it?
“Well I think that, first of all, our country has become too politically correct. And you can find it in any number of areas. Little League, where everybody has to get a trophy now, or otherwise, the poor child that doesn’t get a trophy will have his psyche hurt.”

Origin of the Name
“And I think what you have to do is look at where the term Redskin was originated. There’s some that give the term Redskins a negative connotation to indicate that it was created by the white man, to offend the Indians. But in reality, the term Redskins came from the Indians. And they referred to themselves often times, in treaty negotiations and meetings with the early settlers, as Redskins.
“So it’s not a term that the white man created. It’s actually a term that the Indians themselves created. I just think we have people in this country that try and gin up problems that don’t exist.”

Funny I was looking for this to be on ProFootballTalk since they post everything Redskin name change related like how Champ Bailey thinks they should change the name but duh then I realized they only post news that support their point of view and not news from both points of view like any real journalists would.

It is because they have a tradition with that name... Definitely worth the fight...
