This isn't a surprising move, especially with the addition of Rick Jean Francois. Cofield was effective when healthy. However, he had too many injury issues and he's 30 years old now. Even without adding Francois, he'd have probably been gone.
Cofield, though carrying about a $3.5M dead cap charge due to signing bonus acceleration this year and in 2016, still clears about $4M in cap space. It's unclear, though, how much Francois' cap number is. He signed a three-year deal with $4M guaranteed. That's $1.3M amortized over the length of the contract. His cap number included that amortization plus his base salary and any LTBEs. In all, the net cap effect between cutting Cofield and signing Francois may actually net us a bit more space, but not a whole lot.
This will really down to whether Francois will produce better for us than Cofield. McCloughan made this call so we'll have to trust him on this one -- at least for the time being.
