Actually put yourself in his shoes.

He knows that if the Skins tag him, until and unless he signs the tag, they cant do anything else in free agency. Unless they would be willing to risk pissing Smith off by asking him to hold off on signing his new deal.
Yeah, but neither can he do anything else in FA. That is a two edged sword. He would sign. When appropriate.

At this point, if you tag him again, I am pretty sure Washington would owe Cousin's roughly the GDP of a small country.

Some how Signing and letting Bruce dictate where he goes or who he can talk to does not sound like what he would be cool with.

My take is if they tag him, he will simply say ok IM going to play out the year on the tag where ever I am. In which case Bruce COULD force a trade any way. But what do you really think we are going to get back for what would amount to a one year rental at $35M?

Even if the trade WAS to the place Kirk really wanted to go, His agent would advise him to not sign a long term deal. And I wouldn't blame him at this point.

And Now this

Sources: Redskins think about tagging Cousins

But Washington might want a say in where Cousins winds up, which would enable the Redskins to try to extract compensation in the 2018 draft rather than having him walk away for nothing this year.

However, Cousins still would be able to wield some control of the situation and could force Washington into a challenging if not uncomfortable situation. Washington could not trade him until he signs the franchise tag, and if Cousins wanted, he could delay signing it for weeks or even months, with the Redskins having to count his approximate $34.5 million against their salary cap.

Cousins also could tell any of Washington's potential trade partners that he is unwilling to sign a long-term deal there, dampening that team's enthusiasm for surrendering a top draft pick for his services and holding up any potential trade.

If Washington decided to pull the franchise tag to get Cousins' contract off its salary cap, it would lose the right to recoup a 2019 compensatory draft pick that it would get if Cousins were able to leave right away as a free agent. So tagging Cousins would undoubtedly carry risk.

I think it is possible that he signs the Tag if he thinks about this correctly. If he signs the tag that ups the starting point for any new contract he negotiates with his new team. So, just like when he signed the first two tags, it upped the starting point for a new contract value. Someone just needs to remind him that he can still go where he wants and get more money in the process.

This idea is so fucking crazy it might just work, but i'm seriously LMAO at this franchises one last ditch effort to come away looking as the hero. Why do I picture Snyder and Allen in this picture:

Shark hate Bruce so much it's always Bruce fault maybe gruden told Bruce fuck kirk

Shark remembers when a Redskins GM job was to put together a roster capable of winning on the field. Bruce is the second worst GM in the league over the past 20 years. MIllen was the worst, and Bruce has made me almost miss Vinny.

What if he signs the tag, and no team trades for him?

That's when we get to the Champ Bailey rule where people thought we would get something back for Cousins, but instead we end up trading him to where he wants to go and get to throw in a draft pick to get him off our books.

why wait when you get his rights if they want him bad enough

Why wait?
Because, if he doesnt agree to a LTD the team who trades for him in on the books for 34M and then be in the same spot the Redskins are right now.
Kirk can simply refuse to negotiate and the Skins are fucked.
Skins are playing with fire if the tag him.

umm,, you're wanted elsewhere. This teams fan base would like to be miserable on their own without the help of any outsider intrusion. Thank you for your cooperation. Now if you will please excuse me... I need to "now" go watch the Eagles in the SB. Gah just shoot me already.

This all sounds like putting your head in a guillotine and betting you can pull it out before the blade falls.

How many teams fall out of the running if they tried were to tag Cousin's. Denver would have to do some serious account modifications IMO.

Maybe... I didn’t think it was all about the $$$ for Kirk though :puzzled:

Stupid (but serious) question for some is of you guys. Why would being on the tag be detrimental to getting a Top deal with a team that Cousins likes versus not being on the tag?? Would KC demand more $$$ or would it be about the trade capital said team would have to give up?? Or both??:pop2:

It will be about two things...

1. The trade compensation.
2. Bruce trying to control where Cousins ends up.

I really don't think you go basically all in on Smith if you are that worried about what you could get for Cousins. Also kind of smells fishy that they are dead set on getting "compensation" for a QB they only spent a 4th on, where as they didn't even try to get a 7th rounder for the last QB to leave.

So yea I think this is more about Bruce waving his dick to show he is in charge than any compensation we might get.

Oh I agree they shouldn’t be worried about that after going all in on Smith. And I understand Allen has a major ego problem, but if there is any way we could still get a first out of this, maybe even a touch more, then why not??

I’m sure Elway, Hue Jackson, and several others have some major fucking wood at the thought of getting KC for nothing (wrt draft picks), but seriously...if these guys are in love with Cousins that much, what’s a 1st?? Maybe a 2nd & 4th to them??

Also, not sure any of Kirk’s rumored suitors should Bruce give a shot about. Onky team that is even a remote possibility would be the Giants, and with a very high draft pick to pick one of these QBs, that is very doubtful.

IN a vacuum I would agree with you. But this aint the space station. There is history and while not openly shown, there is bad blood there. From Bruces perspective, it would be awesome to get something for Kirk AND be able to send him to some place where he has less of an opportunity to succeed. We have seen too many times Bruce try to tank a guys career.

Also... while Washington has shown a historical disdain for the value of draft picks (and our fan base seems to agree), most teams DO value draft picks. Giving up a 1st, 2nd or even a 3rd for a guy that Washington really wants no parts of and really cant afford to keep might not sit too well with some GMs.

Tagging KC does make the new contract he signs more expensive.

He will sign the tag quickly and force the Redskin’s hands.

The Redskins are screwing themselves if they tag him.

How does us tagging KC make it more expensive for said team to sign Cousins??

Ultimately it is up to Kirk and his agent to determine what is fair and to determine what they expect from a team that is built to win now versus a team that is not. No?
