The physical aspect of our game has been totally missing in this game; and, without putting hits on this present Leafs team to soften their continued possession, especially with some of the speed they have afoot, they're going to keep that merry-go-round churning in our end repeatedly. And, with the play in our end as often as we've seen it in that stretch for about 25-30 minutes, our speed isn't going to be effective at all. Beyond that, some of our decision-making in the Leafs end in that last period hasn't helped things either, and our neutral ice play has been awful to say the least.
Give the Leafs credit, they kept us off our game all night long. They played our players supporting the puck very tight continually keeping our possession game in the toilet, and they threw their bodies at us the entire game. Sadly we didn't do the same. Hopefully we learned a lessen from it.
This was an entirely different team than the Leafs have shown of late, and they have some key players returning soon. Definitely a team to watch. If they continue to play this tight checking style that we saw them do tonight they might just be a team to reckon with the rest of the season.
To me, overall, Franzen has been hurting this team's progress much more than he has aided it. He seems to have his own agenda too often by taking too many ill-advised swipes at opposing players without regard to how that will affect the team and ultimately the outcome of the game, His personal issues on the ice seem to come first with him. Lately, he is making costly errors to affect our possession game, and at times when he has the puck he seems to be in a quandary as to what to do next. Then, on top of that, there are plays like the perfect pass from Pavel across to him in front of Reimer, which he fanned on, appearing to not be expecting a pass. Apparently, he had forgotten who had the puck at the time. IMO, he doesn't belong on the first line, and he definitely shouldn't be on the PP. He is far too slow afoot, his skills with his stick have diminished considerably already from the start of the season, and when the transition of play goes in the other direction, he becomes prehistoric to say the least.
The Wings played 3 games in 4 nights and the first two of those went to shootout. The Wings dominated the stats on Wednesday but Reimer stole one, and tonight their fatigue showed against a Leaf team coming off a few days' rest. I don't take much out of these five games other than these two teams are pretty evenly matched.
This would make a fucking crazy playoff series, but I'm getting ahead of myself now.
