how often do you see the #1 team in the nation win by 18 and drop in the polls?

This is why preseason rankings are useless.
Mississippi State has looked like the better team. The big difference is FSU started the year ranked number 1, Miss State started the season unranked.
How about they ranked the teams based on performance this season, not last season and not based on where they start the year ranked?
Not that it matters. Mississippi State and Florida State both control their own destiny to the playoffs, as does any other undefeated power 5 team(or independent)
All true, but I can't remember the last time, if ever, a number one team, who is the reigning national champ, has an 18 point conference road win and drops in the polls. Historically, if the reigning champ is ranked no. 1, they usually hold on to that spot until they're beat.
