San Antonio has literally never been bad in its entire history.

It is a tiny market with very little assets, yet they have only missed the playoffs 4 times in history.

They have 1/1000th the financial strength of Miami, LA, Chicago, and Boston.

But, if they win 50 games and lose in the first round, it is considered a horrible failure of a season.

1. Heat - Bring in the best roster in the league you should be #1.

2. Spurs - dedicated to consistency and they win and are smart right now about building and meshing the younger talent in with these veterans, hoping to not skip a beat when the older talent leave. However, can they replace Pop?

3. Dallas - You got an owner that is all about winning and has shown he will do anything to win.

4. Lakers - Slipping here, bringing in the wrong coaches, roster isn't clicking, no chemistry.

5. OKC - So far showing they know how to build success.

30. Atlanta Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks only care about having enough wins and one big name player so they can fill up Phillips Arena. They do not, nor have they ever cared about winning any kind of title.

I have been wishing for the Hawks' owners to sell the team to somebody who cares for many years. Finally, the Falcons did it, but it may never happen for the Hopeless Hapless Hawks fans.

you've been rather vocal about this. you don't have a problem with the Hawks' F.O., do you...?

currently-

1. Heat. 3 straight finals. 2 time champs. going for 4 finals in a row which hasnt been done since 1982-1985. Those lakers were 2-2 in their 4 finals.

2. Spurs. I have a feeling the run is over. but what a hell of a run it was.
3. Indiana. Does more with less than any team in the NBA.
4. OKC. would have put them higher, but they gave away James Harden. i know it would have been hard to sign him and fit everything in. But you dont give him away for nothing, you could have had one more title run with him. after westbrook went down, it was Durant alone. may have been different. But here's what they got for Harden. Kevin Martin (free agent), Jeremy Lamb, and Steven Adams (two more non lotto picks). I think it is safe to say Houston raped them.
5. Memphis. yes they looked bad in the WCF. but they lost a close 4-0 series (is that possible?). 2 OT losses. I give them as good a shot as anyone to come out of the west next year. I used to think they got the bad end of the pau gasol deal, but it's actually looking to be a good trade for them and the lakers.

The Nets look like a very expensive pretender to me.

I agree here but for 1 year they just added a lot of fans with those 2.

I think they are setting up to be a "contender" for next year and sign new talent in the next 2 years. They have given up on D12 so they are moving on. Pierce has 1 year left and KG 2. They will be able to go after pieces in the coming years.

I know Dwill is over paid but he looked great for most of the time he was in the playoffs and they ran out of players to go after, so they got what they could.

I think they just became the new Lakers, they will over pay for talent and the luxury tax to compete every year, they do not have rebuilding years. Hmmm....yes...Brooklyn has a nice ring to it...

Thing is, the Nets have limited themselves to free agency as a means to build. Since so many of their players are overpaid, cap space will prevent them from signing another legit star for at least 2 years.

Not sure if this is true, but I heard Garnett will only waive his no trade clause of the Nets agree to pick up his team option for '14/'15. That means they will be unable to compete for free agents next year, even with Pierce coming off the books.

It looks like they have a lot of money coming off the books next year....but I did not realize the cap was at $58m so that doesn't really matter.

Damn they fkt themselves with Joe. They pretty much max their cap until after the 15/16 season with those 3 guys.

I think they will remain relevant but they have got to trade Joe for a young cheap talent. A hot rookie would be sweet.

See, I have trouble with where to rank Dallas on this list.

On one hand, they built a championship team - that alone should put them over teams like the Rockets and Grizz.

However, Cuban pretty much gave away that team to clear his cap. Then failed to really pitch and land Dwill. So they get downgraded there.

decisions, decisions.......

between 1983-1989 they never finished above .500. They also won a grand total of 2 playoff games those 6 years.

Between 1985-1989 the spurs regular season record was 121-213. I know you love your team, but dont make shit up.

You can make the argument that they were never really that good until they drafted Duncan. That 12-win season where just about half the roster was decimated with injuries was probably the best thing to happen.

I like that they blew it up. He knew they were not going to compete the next couple years. I wish he would have kept some of the better pieces and trimmed the fat but like you said, they thought they were in the D12 sweepstakes, and probably still are.

Still makes them really hard to place though. With Cuban I give a lot of leeway because of his pwnage of Shit Bayless.

How can anyone have the heat above the Spurs? Like Horns said, it should be the Spurs and everybody else. Having Lebron and Bosh signing with you is easy. Whats hard, is the Spurs being title contenders every year with players that other teams miss on. The Spurs are the best draft wizs we have.

The entire thread is about current management. What the Spurs did in the 80s and 90s is irrelevant to this discussion.

Spurs are number 1 by a mile because of the tremendous advantages that markets like LA, NY and MIA have over just about everyone else. There is no margin for error to succeed in a small market like the Spurs have.

A team like the Lakers, on the other hand, can screw up repeatedly (like they have recently) start from scratch and have a contender again in 2 years. Miami is in a similar spot because of the city's popularity as a free agent destination.

my response was to him saying the spurs have been good literally their entire history. hence, why i quoted him. my list had the spurs at #2.

please, try to stay with the group.

who has the best drafts and who has the best front office arent the same question. i will give credit for parker and gibobili... but both picks were over a decade ago now. i will give no credit for duncan... that was a no brainer.

the spurs are a popular free agent destination as well. this is a fantasy that they are not. alot of players have wanted to play aside the great David Robinson and Tim Duncan.

Bruce Bowen, Steve Kerr, Avery Johnson, Stephen Jackson, Robert Horry, Dominque Wilkins... the list goes on. Miami popularity only began recently.. teams ability to attract free agents has alot to do with their roster.

You just listed a bunch of role players. Ability to attract free agents does have a lot to do with their roster, but the big names aren't looking at SA. The NBA is not a level playing field from city to city.

The Heat were a good franchise before LBJ & Bosh also.
