I just read that Hamels threw his 5 pitches 17 times a piece. That it was the 3rd time he had done something like that in 310 starts and 2 of those 3 times have been this April.

I saw a little of the late replay on FSSW last night and his changeup was really saving his butt the first couple innings, his fastball was not consistent and seemed down velocity wise, I only saw one fastball in the 90s, and several in the 87-88 range

He has definitely struggled with his command. It is just good that he has other pitches to go to and he is not afraid to use them.

Starting early. Hope it's not serious. Maybe Romeo can enlighten

What is elbow impingement?
Elbow impingement is a condition characterized by compression and damage to soft tissue (such as cartilage) situated at the back of, or within the elbow joint.

The elbow joint primarily comprises of the articulation of two bones, the humerus (upper arm bone) and the ulna (inner forearm bone - figure 1). Shock absorbing cartilage lies between these joint surfaces cushioning the impact of one bone on another.

When the elbow is straightened fully (figure 2), soft tissue is compressed at the back of the joint. If these compressive forces are excessive or too repetitive and beyond what the joint can withstand, damage and inflammation of the cartilage and/or soft tissue at the back of the elbow joint may occur. This condition is known as elbow impingement. Occasionally, bony spurs may develop within the elbow joint contributing to the problem.

In those patients who do not respond adequately to physiotherapy treatment, corticosteroid injection or arthroscopic surgery may be indicated to treat or remove the structures causing the impingement.

Hate to hear this, but on the other hand, if he's got a problem, let's address now, and address it correctly.

Now is a better time than later in the season IMO.

Ventura was diagnosed with this 2 years ago and only missed one start. On the other hand, C J was diagnosed with it early last August and hasn't pitched since.

Depending on the mri, I'd be inclined to just do arthroscopic surgery and remove the loose cartilage. He wouldn't miss that much time in the grand scheme of things.

I agree. And like sort of said, "get it fixed and fixed correctly right now."

We need this youngster pitching full tilt.

Reading reports of around 12 weeks on Twitter.... or, ya know... the all star break.

Sadly it's part of the game. Choo and Hamilton will be back soon.

Thank God we've got the depth at upper levels to play through it.

Then fix it and get him back around the ASB. No sense in screwing around with this for 4 weeks only to decide he's going to have the surgery anyways.
